NY Giants news: 5 offensive coordinator candidates with Todd Monken to Browns

Todd Monken, the preferred choice of head coach John Harbaugh to become offensive coordinator of the New York Giants, will instead become head coach of the Cleveland Browns. The Browns chose Monken over Jim Schwartz and Nate Scheelhaase.

So, who could Harbaugh hire to run the Giants’ offense and be in control of the development of second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart?

Here are five possibilities.

Davis Webb

The two-time Giants’ backup quarterback remains a candidate for the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coaching job, one of three remaining after the Buffalo Bills promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to their top job. Webb had been a candidate for that job.

If Webb doesn’t land a head-coaching job, a promotion to offensive coordinator seems like a natural move for the Denver Broncos’ quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.

Webb is familiar to the Giants, who selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft and brought him back to back up Daniel Jones in 2022. He is familiar to GM Joe Schoen from their time together in Buffalo.

Webb has only been coaching for three years, having retired after that 2022 season with the Giants. He is, though, considered a rising star. He is credited with helping develop Bo Nix in Denver, and with having a hand in Jones’ best season as a Giant in 2022.

“He’s always prepared me extremely well, especially from the get-go,” Nix said. “He played the position and knows what it’s like to walk into a game. He prepares me on a very good level and we’re always ready for the task at hand.”

Here is Webb talking about working with quarterbacks:

Nate Scheelhaase

Scheelhaase, 35, is, like Webb, a rising star in the coaching industry. Scheelhaase, the Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator under Sean McVay the past two seasons, was a relative unknown to fans before this hiring cycle. He certainly was not an unknown in NFL circles.

Scheelhaase was one of three finalists for the Browns’ head coaching job. He interviewed for head coaching jobs with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens.

McVay spoke highly of Scheelhaase near the end of the 2025 season:

“He’s a great coach,” McVay said, per SI.com. “He has great leadership, great capacity for the game, similar to a lot of our other great coaches. First and foremost, he has great character. There’s an ability to be able to connect with all different types.

“There’s an ability to own the game from an all-22 perspective. He’s excellent. I’ve really enjoyed working with him. He’s a great person, first and foremost, and he has a great family. He’s been outstanding, working with the receivers, but he has a tremendous impact on our team and our group as a whole.”

Scheelhaase was the offensive coordinator at Iowa State in 2023 before joining the Rams.

Charlie Weis Jr.

Weis, 32, has never coached in the NFL. He was, however, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ole Miss from 2022-2025, meaning he has extensive experience working with Giants’ quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Weis followed Lane Kiffin from Ole Miss to USC this offseason, where he will be that team’s offensive coordinator.

Weis is the son of Charlie Weis, who was a Giants’ assistant from 1990-1992 and was head coach at Notre Dame from 2005-2009.

Willie Taggart

Taggart has already joined the Giants’ coaching staff after working for Harbaugh as running backs coach in Baltimore since 2023. Taggart did, technically, interview for the team’s offensive coordinator position and could be a fallback option.

Taggart played for Harbaugh’s father, Jack, at Western Kentucky and then began his coaching career working at Western Kentucky under the elder Harbaugh. He coached under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford from 2007-2009.

Taggart has been head coach at Western Kentucky, South Florida, Oregon, Florida State, and Florida Atlantic.

Tee Martin

The one-time quarterback for the Tennesse Volunteers was on Harbaugh’s staff in Baltimore for the past five seasons. He was wide receivers coach in 2021 and 2022, then moved to quarterbacks coach in 2023. He was offensive coordinator at USC from 2016-2018.

Martin drew interest in this hiring cycle from the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders for their offensive coordinator positions.

Martin is credited with helping Lamar Jackson improve as a pocket passer.

Martin recently discussed the possibility of joining Harbaugh in New York:
