Howie Roseman’s unprompted support of Nick Sirianni feels notable

The Eagles are assuredly doing their due diligence and considering all potential candidates as they look to fill their offensive coordinator position, but as most of the people they’ve brought in for interviews have already taken other opportunities, speculation as to the quality of the role has emerged. From blaming Eagles fans to blaming Super Bowl MVP quarterback Jalen Hurts, there’s no shortage of guesses as to why the position hasn’t been filled yet.

While the logical answer is that the team is taking their time to make the right decision, some are also speculating about how much head coach Nick Sirianni is hindering interest. The head coach has been to the playoffs five straight seasons, he’s been to two Super Bowls and won one, he has the support of the locker room and players, and is one of the winningest head coaches, not only in franchise history, but also in NFL history.

Eagles GM Howie Roseman also gave Sirianni an unprompted show of support during the duos end-of-season news conference.

ROSEMAN: “I’ve got a lot of things that I’d like to say about Coach [Nick Sirianni] and the job that he’s done here. I’m incredibly proud of him, but he’s shown that when we bring people in that he’s open to doing whatever’s best for this football team, and that all he cares about is winning.”

Sirianni’s tenure as a play caller and his involvement in the process, despite giving up play calling duties several years ago, is also something people point to as a hinderance to the OC search. Both Sirianni and Roseman were forthcoming about been open and flexible to various roles and autonomy over the offense depending on the candidate and that candidate’s experience. They weren’t able to issue sweeping assurances, but were more than willing to lean on whomever they were bringing in and how best to work with them in the system.

ROSEMAN: “Obviously, I sit here and I feel incredibly grateful that I’m working with someone who, as a head coach, is elite at being a head coach, elite at building connections with our team, elite about talking about fundamentals, game management, situational awareness, bringing the team together, holding people accountable. When you’re looking for a head coach, those are really the job descriptions. As you’re building out a coaching staff, you’re talking about being able to do that, being able to have elite play callers on both sides of the ball, and when you think about how hard it is to find those three things and that we have one, I mean, we’re starting with a huge advantage. I think that puts us in a great spot.”

So, while fans wait to see what direction the offense will be going in after completely underperforming in 2025, they shouldn’t put too much stock into the notion that Sirianni doesn’t have the support of the organization — but we’ll have to see how that impacts the OC search.
