There’s a new known candidate in the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator search.
The Birds interviewed Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sam Mannion, according to a report from Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports. UPDATE: Mike Garafolo notes that Mannion previously interviewed virtually but will now come to Philly for an in-person interview.
Mannion was a third-round pick (No. 89 overall) by the St. Louis Rams in the 2015 NFL Draft. He made three starts in 14 career games played before retiring after the 2023 season. Mannion quickly pivoted to coaching; he joined Matt LaFleur’s coaching staff as an offensive assistant in 2024. He was then promoted to his current title in 2025 to replace Tom Clements, who retired.
Some reasons why Mannion could appeal to the Eagles:
- He has connections to Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay through working with LaFleur on the Packers.
- He has a connection to McVay through being on the Los Angeles Rams’ roster for multiple seasons.
- He has a connection to Kevin O’Connell through being on the Minnesota Vikings’ roster for multiple stints.
- Jordan Love logged the second-best passer rating of his career with Mannion as his position coach.
- Backup quarterback Malik Willis has performed much better with the Packers than he did with the Tennessee Titans whenever he’s had to play.
The flip side is that Mannion obviously lacks play-calling experience and he’s only two seasons into his coaching career.
Hiring Mannion seems like a big risk but it could be preferable to some of the lower upside offensive coordinator options that remain available to the Eagles.
