NY Giants news, 1/26: Coaching staff, John Harbaugh expectations, more

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Jon Runyan Jr. knows what Giants can expect from John Harbaugh better than anyone | New York Post

“Everywhere the Harbaughs go, they are winning. Plain and simple,” Runyan told The Post. “It’s exciting. That’s exactly what we need in New York right now.”

Giants are No. 1.

Expecting the former Ravens coach to replicate what the New England Patriots or Chicago Bears achieved in Year 1 of their new regimes would be unreasonable. Still, Harbaugh’s track record – just three losing seasons in 18 years – is the stuff of dreams for a Giants franchise tied for the fewest wins since 2017 (44).

Harbaugh was the one option this cycle who looked capable of flipping an organization’s culture, even if it required some uncomfortable shifts. Given how set in their ways the Giants have been, the transformation might not take place overnight. But Big Blue has seen sharp play-callers flame out, so inspiring hope was going to necessitate finding someone capable of addressing the very core of the organization.

In Harbaugh, they now have that.

Could Rex Ryan Return to NFL After Decade at ESPN? | Front Office Sports

There’s growing chatter the ex-Jets and Bills head coach might leave ESPN for a return to the NFL sideline. New Giants coach John Harbaugh floated the possibility of Ryan becoming his defensive coordinator next season (Ryan served under Harbaugh with the Ravens in 2008 before being hired by the Jets).

“Why not? Could you imagine Rex coming back in here? I’m not ruling anything out,” Harbaugh said in an interview with WFAN. “A guy like Rex, he’s around the game, he knows the game. He’s going to have to get updated a little bit with some of the scheme stuff, but I’ll tell you, no one calls a better game than Rex Ryan.

John Harbaugh is Giants’ next Tom Coughlin … after Darius Slayton spoke it into existence | The Athletic

Darius Slayton wanted a “Coughlin-esque” head coach for the Giants. He got one.

“I definitely think (Harbaugh) fits the brand of coach/person I was referring to and thought we needed,” said Slayton, who has studied more than his share of Giants history. “The powers that be looked at the issues and came to the same conclusion.

“People like to say that history repeats itself. You think about New York, and especially nowadays with social media and the media in general, it’s a different place. It takes a certain brand of human to weather the storm and win here. … Bill Parcells was a man of conviction who had a process and a way of doing things. Tom Coughlin was cut from the same cloth. (New York) is a very easy place to get swayed by common opinion. It takes a certain person to rise above that.”

Ranking NFL head coach hires: Giants and John Harbaugh top class, Steelers go safe with Mike McCarthy | Sporting News

Another vote for John Harbaugh as best in class.

Harbaugh being let go by the Ravens was a late shocker following an injury-riddled season in Baltimore, with the team falling just short of winning the AFC North and returning to the playoffs. He immediately became the most sought-after head coach by every team in need, with New York getting an early start after firing Brian Daboll in the middle of the season.

Harbaugh won right away with the Ravens and continued to win for most of his tenure, including a Super Bowl victory against his brother, Jim. The Giants have been longing for that savvy and stability since Tom Coughlin led them to two championships. Harbaugh brings that kind of excitement back to Big Blue, adding to the promise of second-year, first-round QB Jaxson Dart.

Giants’ Cam Skattebo says college earnings from NIL are creating entitled NFL rookies | FOX News

“You could just tell by the way these college kids act now,” Skattebo said. “There’s some people act right, some people don’t care that there was ever such thing as a rookie situation.”

“I got rookie duties cause I’m a rookie, and I’m not going to sit there and say, ‘No, f— you.’ If my vets tell me to go get some snacks for the running back room for weeks in and weeks out, like I’m going to go get the snacks,” Skattebo said.

“Some rookies are going to tell you, like, ‘Bro, I’m not going to get you snacks, bro. You can go get your own snacks.’ I’m not going to say no names, but there’s some rookies that do that.”
