Eagles News: Cooper DeJean praised for being the key to a great modern NFL defense

Eagles Question of the Day:

Should the Eagles always keep Cooper DeJean at nickel or eventually move him outside? Or to safety? And how do you think his role could impact a contract extension down the road when he becomes eligible after the 2026 season? Head over to The Feed and weigh in with your answer and explanation!

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles news and links …

The secret to great NFL defense in this era? Having a premium nickel – The Athletic

There’s a key to taking an NFL defense to the next level in today’s game: Get a premium nickel corner. The best defenses in the league don’t just have good players at nickel, they have difference-makers playing in a spot that was once reserved for a third corner, not good enough to play outside. Look no further than this year’s playoff teams to see examples: The Seattle Seahawks’ Nick Emmanwori, the Houston Texans’ Jalen Pitre, the Los Angeles Rams’ Quentin Lake, the Los Angeles Chargers’ Derwin James and the Philadelphia Eagles’ Cooper DeJean are all standout nickels. DeJean has been the glue for an Eagles defense that had an exodus of talent from their Super Bowl-winning unit. […] “The nickel now has become a premium position, a defensive-defining position,” Eagles safeties coach Joe Kasper told The Athletic. “So having that length and strength is a big advantage, you know, to be able to reroute and disrupt releases of routes. Foot speed to be able to match routes when you’re talking about being able to play true single-high coverage. And then your vision to be able to identify route concepts.” The ability to quickly process information in a short distance is also essential. Whether they are in the box or playing 1 to 3 yards away from a three-receiver bunch, they have to see and read their keys in an instant.

Cooper DeJean looks ahead to 2026 and his ideal role on Vic Fangio’s defense – NBCSP

And as tempting as it may be for Vic Fangio to make DeJean a full-time outside cornerback and put the next-best guy in the slot, DeJean said he wants to stay in the slot moving forward. “I like playing inside,” he said. “I like playing inside, being involved in the run game, and I feel like I have the abilities to do that at that position. Obviously, it’s not up to me, but that’s what I’d like to do.”

Eagles offensive coordinator search updates: Brian Daboll still in the mix? – BGN

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that Daboll is expected to be the new Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator if he doesn’t land the Buffalo Bills head coaching job. However, the latest buzz from NFL insider Jeremy Fowler suggests that Daboll to Philly hasn’t been ruled out: “I’m not totally convinced former Giants head coach Brian Daboll is off the table, though there’s not much buzz there at the moment.” There’s currently an article on Music City Miracles titled: “How long can Titans wait for Brian Daboll to make a decision?” And it’s a fair question. The longer Daboll keeps them waiting, the greater the chance the Titans miss out on their top backup options at offensive coordinator. Maybe the Titans grow impatient and go with someone else but Daboll doesn’t get the Bills job, leaving him available for the Eagles?

Mailbag: Thoughts on the Eagles’ coaching search, and their current coaches – PhillyVoice
Question from @Bula412: How hot is Nick Sirianni’s seat? I’d say it’s warm. Jeff McLane of the Inquirer reported that Sirianni was nearly fired following the 2023 season (which we all kind of already knew), but also that he was nearly fired during the bye week of the 2024 season. So, Jeffrey Lurie isn’t exactly fully bought in on Sirianni. I think there’s a strong argument to be made that Sirianni helped waste a season in which the defense was outstanding, and if that happens again Lurie might feel that Sirianni helped waste a chance for the Eagles to be an NFL dynasty.

Coaching Update – Iggles Blitz

Jim Bob Cooter feels like someone who should get more attention. He spent the past three years working with Shane Steichen. He was the offensive coordinator with the Lions from 2016-2018. He was a consultant with the Eagles in 2021 so he knows the staff and some of the players already. The key for me is to find someone who has a creative mind and is also a problem-solver. Kevin Patullo did a fantastic job of calling plays in the red zone. He showed some creativity there. He could not solve problems all year long. The OL was a mess. Once you know that you adjust. Patullo was never able to do that. All candidates should be quizzed heavily on how they would deal with obstacles (injuries, performance issues, etc.).

Man who stole Eagles’ A.J. Brown’s car accepts plea deal. How long will he be in prison? – NJ.com

The New Jersey man who stole a luxury car from Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown’s house and drove it to Camden will spend half a decade in prison. Luis Segurra, 26, of Camden, pled guilty Friday in Camden County Superior Court to third-degree receiving of a stolen vehicle, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and fourth degree resisting arrest.

Atlanta Falcons head coaching and GM search 2026: Tracking candidates, reports, and rumors – The Falcoholic

Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Joe Douglas. Status: Interviewed 1/23. This is the first candidate I’m not loving. We have to acknowledge how dysfunctional the Jets are and how hands-on the owner is, but Douglas consistently missed on his draft picks after the first round during his time in New York and failed to build a winning team throughout. The fact that the Eagles wanted Douglas back speaks to his acumen, but his track record is not particularly impressive.

Sean Payton looking to join short list of coaches to make Super Bowl with different teams – ESPN

Andy Reid. Perhaps the best modern example of a coach who found a stronger second wind at a second coaching destination, Reid enjoyed a successful 14-season spell with the Philadelphia Eagles — including eight regular seasons with double-digit wins — but came up just short in his lone trip to the Super Bowl. Following his time with the Eagles, Reid headed west to take over the Kansas City Chiefs — a decision that would prove wise. Reid got the Chiefs humming, finally breaking through in 2019 for his first Super Bowl win in a lengthy coaching career … and then two more in the five seasons after that.

3 reasons to love the Cowboys hiring of Christian Parker as defensive coordinator – Blogging The Boys

The Dallas Cowboys wide search for a new defensive coordinator is over, with the news coming across on Thursday afternoon that Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Christian Parker was the man for the job. Two years removed from seeing their own former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore win a Super Bowl within the division for the Eagles, and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn leave for the Washington Commanders and take them to the NFC Championship game in year one as their head coach, the Cowboys decided to dip their toes in these NFC East waters. They pulled from their biggest rival to set a new direction on defense following the disaster that was the one-and-done Matt Eberflus experience in 2025. The Cowboys do so on the heels of the Eagles winning the NFC East for consecutive seasons, breaking an over two decade stretch where no team repeated as the division winner. Dallas will be hellbent on putting their name at the top of the division in 2026 to start a new streak of different winners, and potentially weakening the coaching strength of the Eagles with this move to address easily the biggest weakness for the Cowboys is a great place to start at the moment. There are a lot of reasons to really like this move for the Cowboys, and a lot to learn about yet another scheme change the Cowboys had little choice but to make given their defensive results this past season. Let’s take a closer look at some of these reasons.

The more I learn about the Commanders’ recently-promoted offensive coaches, the more excited I am – Hogs Haven

It turns out that Commanders fans have gotten what so many of us have constantly asked for in recent years — the team has decided NOT to let one or more bright young coaches leave in search of promotion opportunities, but to reward those bright sparks with promotions that keep them in DC. We won’t have to look at Blough or Stapleton like we do at LeFleur or McDaniel and ponder what could have been; they are staying put in Washington instead of being hired away by other teams. At this point, I think the exciting (and nerve-wracking) part of the Blough hire will be finding out what he’s going to be about as an offensive coordinator over the coming 9 to 12 months. He could turn out to be a lump of coal in the stocking or the next Sean McVay. It will be fun (or incredibly frustrating) finding out which it is. For my part, I’m feeling optimistic about what lies ahead with out new offensive coordinator.

4 candidates seem to be the focus of NY Giants’ defensive coordinator search – Big Blue View

Dennard Wilson. The 43-year-old Wilson is familiar to Harbaugh, and to the Giants. Wilson was Harbaugh’s defensive backs coach in Baltimore in 2023 before becoming Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Wilson also interviewed for the Giants’ job in 2024, but chose to take the Tennessee job. Wilson’s defenses in Tennessee did not rank highly, but the Titans won just six games in two seasons and Wilson didn’t have a lot to work with. Wilson had a supporter in Tennessee star defender Jeffery Simmons. Wilson interviewed with the Los Angeles Chargers, coached by Jim Harbaugh, for their defensive coordinator vacancy on Friday.

Prior to ending up in Baltimore, Wilson spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles where he coached defensive backs (2021-2022) and held pass game coordinator responsibilities (2022).

Rams vs. Seahawks NFC Championship will be cinema with Super Bowl berth on line – SB Nation

Once in a great while the stars align to give us something truly special in the playoffs. The NFC Championship is that game. Sunday will see the Rams and Seahawks complete their NFC West trilogy with a rubber match to finally settle who is better between these two juggernauts. It’s a game that could very well be better than the Super Bowl itself, because these teams have already given us two classics during the 2025 season. It’s not simply that these teams are meeting for a third time that makes the NFC Championship game so special, but it’s the how these teams have played against each other which takes it to an entirely new level. The first meeting was settled by two points, the second by one in overtime — a single extra point decided the regular season balance between these two teams, and to have that span two games is absolutely unheard of. Now we dive into those two games, see what made them tick, and decide if we can learn anything about the NFC Championship by looking at the history between these teams during the regular season.
