Giants news, 1/23: Changes begin; Jaxson Dart, Abdul Carter up for Rookie honors

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

John Harbaugh wanted to coach Jaxson Dart. And Jaxson Dart wanted John Harbaugh to coach him.

And now New York will get to watch the beginnings of the kind of relationship that Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin enjoyed when they chased Super Bowls together.

“His the coach that every single one of us had at the top of our list,” said Dart.

The defensive coordinator position has the most intrigue because Harbaugh has connections to several options who have DC experience. Zach Orr was Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, but that didn’t go particularly well. If Orr doesn’t get the Giants’ DC job, he could land as the inside linebackers coach, which is the role he filled before his promotion to coordinator in Baltimore.

Anthony Weaver has spent the past two seasons as the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator after spending three years on Harbaugh’s staff as the defensive line coach. Weaver also had the titles of assistant head coach and run game coordinator in Baltimore. Dennard Wilson spent the 2023 season as the Ravens’ defensive backs coach before getting hired as the Titans’ defensive coordinator. Wilson, who was a top target for the Giants’ DC job in 2024, should be available after the Titans hired Robert Saleh as their new coach.

Their first target is a coach Harbaugh knows well. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that they have requested an interview with Ravens assistant head coach/running backs coach Willie Taggart.

Taggart joined the Ravens as a position coach in 2023 and added the assistant head coach title in 2025. Taggart has strong Harbaugh family ties. Was with John in Baltimore. Actually played QB for Jack Harbaugh at Western Kentucky and coached with him there as well. Also coached with Jim at Stanford.

Why John Harbaugh hire for NY Giants means everything for Joe Schoen | The Record

Joe Schoen is taking nothing for granted.

This is how the game is played nowadays: it’s hard for those who want to claim to be so invested in the New York Giants from the outside to truly appreciate what someone who actually is invested looks like.

For years, John Mara was mocked for his emotional outbursts captured by television cameras during the broadcast of games that represented some of the most frustrating outcomes in the team’s recent history. When the co-owner and team president would talk about his temper and how no one felt the anguish of the Giants’ struggles more than him, he wasn’t offering excuses – he was being real.

Dart’s start to the season was stronger than his finish, a reality brought on by his failure to protect himself while trying to will the Giants to victories. That element of his game must be improved if he is to enjoy a lengthy career. It’s Priority No. 1 entering 2026, but there are plenty of examples that suggest Dart could become the reliable signal-caller the Giants have lacked for quite some time. He’s already demonstrated a creative instinct that makes him difficult to defend as both a runner and passer, an accurate arm, a willingness to scramble for positive gains and a competitive fire reminiscent of Baker Mayfield’s moxie. That last trait could produce some volatile performances, but for the Giants, they should welcome that passion. Dart will need to improve when it comes to his decision-making as a passer, but much of his development will depend on whom John Harbaugh tabs as his offensive coordinator. If Dart lands an experienced play-caller with a knack for fitting his system to his quarterback, a beautiful product could emerge, especially once he gets Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers back from injury. That is, of course, if Dart manages to avoid his own ailments.

The player who comes to mind as a comparison for Robinson is Curtis Samuel, a fellow undersized second-round pick who had his best season just before hitting free agency. In 2021, Samuel signed a three-year, $34.5 million deal with Washington on the open market. That $11.5 million average salary would translate to $19.2 million with the projected 2026 cap. That might be a little high, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Robinson land a deal worth north of $15 million per year. And with the Giants wanting to surround Dart with playmakers while he’s on a rookie contract, I could see GM Joe Schoen justifying that sort of move.

Wan’Dale Robinson is a high-volume inside-outside receiver who developed a strong rapport with rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart this past season. He hauled in 92 passes for 1,014 yards and four touchdowns. Big Blue will have a projected $1.8 million in cap space entering the 2026 offseason. Under Harbaugh, its roster will undergo changes, likely leading to cuts and trades. That said, don’t be surprised if Schoen wants to re-sign one of his recent early-round draft picks who can aid Dart’s development.
