Changes are certainly coming for the Detroit Lions’ offense now that they’ve hired Drew Petzing to be their new offensive coordinator. While coach Dan Campbell is likely to still have his thumb on the scale, and Petzing’s overall philosophies certainly seem to overlap heavily with what Detroit has already had success with, the new coordinator will bring his own ideas and philosophies to the table. And that stands to benefit certain people within the Lions organization.
So this week, over on our YouTube page, Meko Scott and Morgan Cannon took a detailed look at Petzing’s past and forecasted which Detroit Lions may benefit most from his hiring. I won’t give all the sauce away in this post, but here’s a portion of their discussion when it came to how this hire could benefit the likes of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.
Meko: “I think when you look at Arizona’s ability to have such a strong run game for two out of the three years that he was there, screams volumes for what the Lions and their fans can be hopeful for this upcoming season, because—no disrespect to James Conner, because I think he is a very good running back—but when you look at what they were able to do with him and what they were able to do with that offensive line, Jahmyr Gibbs was on the cusp this year where we were like, ‘This might be the best running back in football right now. This could be your Offensive Player of the Year,’ because of the run that he was on. […] When you look at the combination of Petzing having a diverse blocking run scheme where they do like to run man and duo, they do like to run power, I think that’s going to put Jah—and specifically Monty, as well—in a position to where they can find a lot of success.”
Morgan: “I want to see Jahmyr’s role continue to develop as a receiver. Petzing had a really diverse and effective screen game in Arizona for a couple of those years. […] Screens are one of those things: it’s a lot of details. You’ve got to be at your landmarks; it’s timing. That’s something the Lions were just not good (at last year).”
You can catch the entire conversation below, where the duo talks about how the hire impacts Dan Campbell, Jared Goff, Sam LaPorta, and others.
