The New York Giants made a minor roster move on Thursday, signing former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle DeMarvin Leal to a reserve/futures contract.
Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about this is that Leal will now become the answer to the trivia question “who was the first player the Giants signed in the John Harbaugh era?”
Leal was a third-round pick by the Steelers in the 2022 NFL Draft. He has played in 32 games over four seasons for the Steelers, with six starts. Leal has one career sack, 35 tackles, and three quarterback hits. Having played the Steelers twice a year as Baltimore Ravens coach, Harbaugh is certainly familiar with him.
Leal, 25, is 6-foot-4, 290 pounds.
This is certainly not the kind of big free agent news we will get in a couple of months. Nor is it anywhere as impactful as the changes currently going on throughout the Giants’ coaching staff and front office.
Still, roster building goes on constantly and defensive line depth is never a bad thing.
