It’s Thursday, we’re closer to the AFC and NFC Championships then we have been all season, and I still see people talking about last week’s Divisional Round games (for good and fair reason!), and some pivotal/controversial plays which helped to decide the contests.
For the Buffalo Bills and the Los Angeles Rams, there were two huge moments involving Bradon Cooks and Davante Adams, respectively.
If you feel like they are the same play, that’s fine, you can feel that way, however that’s just like your opinion, man. Just as this is just like my opinion, man!
I watched both plays in real-time, and though I was rooting for Buffalo (for my friends and family who love them), the more I saw that Cooks play via review, the more it looked like he never had control of the ball, whereas the Denver defender did.
Now, could the refs have called it a catch? I think so, as plays can be subjective and that’s just true, but I also think they got the call right by saying it was Denver’s ball.
When I watched Adams’s play, I thought it was a catch, though it’s not my call to make, it’s up to the officials, but they said Adams did complete the catch and was down by contact, so despite it looking like the Chicago Bears had taken the ball, that’s not how it was called.
Now could the refs have called that play a turnover? Yes, I think they could have.
Regardless, to me, they aren’t the same exact play, and thus, they were called differently.
So, do we know what a catch is? Nope, I have seen different crews call it how they see fit, and I have seen what a “catch” is change over the years.
If I recall, the ball used to never be able to touch the ground, now it can as long as the player has “control.” That’s just one example of something I think I’ve seen change over the years.
You can be fired up about calls not going your way, but you are not alone, that’s part of the game, and in these particular cases, I think the NFL got it “right”, and the results were different in each case because they were NOT the same play, but you can watch how you want, see it how you want and think what you want! I just may disagree and may disagree with me! That’s supposed to be part of the fun.
It’s just been an interesting time around the NFL, but I suppose it always is. There are always controversial calls, and that won’t change, and the stakes are getting higher.
Sunday is coming.

“But I’ve seen destiny come up short far too often to be a big believer. The Bears may have been better on Sunday, but the Rams were the better, more reliable team during the season, and I figured if there was indeed any destiny playing out, it was that LA and Seattle were destined to meet a third time to determine the NFC championship.
These were the two best teams in the NFC throughout the season. They may well have been the two best in the entire NFL, though it now appears that New England will have something to say about that in a few weeks. But first, we get a fascinating third matchup between two long-time rivals.“
