Giants news, 1/22: Joe Schoen’s role, Tom Coughlin, Carmen Bricillo

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

3 NFL teams that can be next year’s Patriots and go from worst to first | SB Nation

It starts with John Harbaugh, an experienced head coach who became one of the more enticing candidates this hiring cycle when his time with the Baltimore Ravens came to an end. Harbaugh’s tenure in Baltimore includes several division titles as well as a Super Bowl, so his experience helps shore up that piece of the puzzle, and you can draw some comparisons to Vrabel in New England.

Then there is the quarterback. Like the Patriots last year, the Giants have hope in rising second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart. He does need to take better care of himself on the field, and limit his exposure to unnecessary hits. In fact, this might be where Harbaugh’s experience comes in first, given his time with Lamar Jackson, another quarterback that needed to limit his exposure to unnecessary hits.

But the pieces, and parallels, are there. Add in a fourth-place schedule and some questions around the rest of the NFC East, and you might have the strongest candidate on this list.

Tom Coughlin on his role in the hiring of John Harbaugh

Former Giants safety Andrew Adams (2016-17) understands what they are about to go through because he finished his career playing under Harbaugh for the 2023 Ravens, who won the AFC North at 13-4.

“The way they do things, you know, the way he ran the building, essentially, very similar to that feel you get when you walk in the Giants’ facility – there’s a standard. There’s trophies … used to winning, right?” he said. “There’s a way that Harbaugh does things, and there’s a way that he’s been successful. And I think bringing that to New York will be very beneficial. I think it marries well from his stint in Baltimore and coming now to New York. He’s definitely tough, I would say that … you know, kind of your ‘Old School’ football, but fair in a sense that I guess ‘Old School’ coaches aren’t considered ‘Players’ coaches’ in a sense.”

John Harbaugh’s to-do list now that he is officially the Giants’ coach | The Record

“I think I stopped watching mid-game and sent a text to John, saying something like, ‘Just watch this game and tell me what you see. You’ve got to take the Giants job. It’s the New York Football Giants.’”

John Harbaugh era begins with advice from Dad.

John Harbaugh is Giants’ ‘most important cog.’ Now, Joe Schoen must figure out how to fit in | The Athletic

Harbaugh won’t be looking for a yes-man in a GM. The Ravens embraced disagreement in personnel evaluations; Schoen will need to flex the deep football knowledge Harbaugh praised when they’re holed up in the war room poring over free agents and draft prospects.

That’s when this relationship and power dynamic will be put to the test. It was easy for everyone to say the right thing during the courting phase, and the compliments flowed freely during Tuesday’s coronation. Those sentiments will fade, just as the chairs from Tuesday’s ceremony were folded up. Now, the work begins.

Latest Giants Rumors on John Harbaugh’s Coaching Staff, Potential Interview Requests | Bleacher Report

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported Wednesday that Harbaugh is expected to “request permission to speak with a significant number of Ravens coaches and employees, perhaps submitting over 20 slips.”

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Ravens have already blocked “a handful of coaches” from making lateral moves to other teams. The Ravens have already blocked special teams coordinator Chris Horton, and might also retain special teams assistant Anthony Levine Sr. and senior special teams coach Randy Brown,

As new head coach John Harbaugh begins assembling his staff after leaving Baltimore for East Rutherford, the New York Giants front office has made its preferences clear on key holdovers. The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reports that the organization has strongly recommended retaining offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo.

Bricillo, hired in 2024, dramatically improved a unit that had long been considered one of the NFL’s worst, fostering cohesion and strong play from a revamped group. His work earned widespread praise, making him a fan favorite and a priority for continuity. Adding to the endorsements, Harbaugh’s father, Jack, told The Record’s Art Stapleton that he urged his son to keep Bricillo, jokingly insisting on it.

Dan Orlovsky’s key steps for Giants success next year

Here’s what a Giants legend wants Jaxson Dart to learn this offseason | NJ.com

Former Giants quarterback Eli Manning likes what he’s seen from Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart’s rookie season, but the former two-time Super Bowl champion wants the first-round pick to change one thing.Robert Kraft wants NFL to go to 18-game schedule

“Obviously, the number one thing is he’s got to learn to be available every week,” Manning said. “He takes some hits. That’s just something being young and understanding that these guys are big in the NFL and the hits are a little bit bigger. You’ve got to learn when to slide, when to take the hits and do those things.”

Secret Superstars: The most underrated impact players of the 2025 NFL season | PFF

New York Giants: CB Cor’Dale Flott. It is hard to be a secret in New York, but the Giants’ 4-13 record made Cor’Dale Flott’s 2025 season underappreciated. He was arguably New York’s best coverage defender, allowing a team-low 51.6% completion rate and giving up just one touchdown. When targeting Flott, opposing quarterbacks posted a 71.0 passer rating, the best mark among Giants defenders.

Will they just take a “best player available” approach with this pick? The Giants could use another offensive playmaker, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, cornerback or safety. They definitely have options. With new coach John Harbaugh now the biggest voice in the room, anything is possible. But something tells me he’s going to build from the trenches (the same as he did in Baltimore 18 years ago), especially with his desire to make the Giants a “more physical team.”
