Giants news, 1/14: Coaching watch continues, Jaxson Dart, Brian Burns

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Why the NY Giants’ all-in pursuit of John Harbaugh is worth the risk | The Record

The New York Giants are throwing everything they can into the pursuit of John Harbaugh to convince him to become their next head coach.

They’ll deal with fallout if he says no.

And make no mistake: there is risk involved for the Giants as a franchise in putting the full-court press on Harbaugh with no assurances it will result in a contract while, at the same time, team brass is continuing the interview process with other candidates, all of whom can’t have any delusions that they are No. 1.

Brian Burns believes the Giants have a bright future

The veteran head coach is said to be looking for a team that has a strong quarterback situation, according to a source close to Harbaugh. The Giants have Jaxson Dart, a talented rookie who works best off-platform in much the same way that Lamar Jackson does in Baltimore. Draft capital is also important. This would allow Harbaugh the opportunity to add good, young players in much the same way they did in Baltimore during much of his tenure. The Giants have the fifth pick. They don’t have a third-round pick this season (that was used to get Dart in the 2025 draft), but they could perhaps replenish with a trade.

Then there is the idea of having a strong salary cap situation and financial flexibility. The Giants are currently estimated to have just over $20 million in cap space this offseason (which will grow significantly with some cuts) and over $100 million in 2027. Ownership, management structure and general manager will also be factors. Giants ownership generally has a good reputation. There aren’t believed to be any real red flags with the organization, and the presence of general manager Joe Schoen, to this point, hasn’t been mentioned as a problem, the source close to Harbaugh said.

O’Connor: Everybody loves John Harbaugh, that’s why Giants are going all out to get him | The Athletic

Fit is what is most essential. Harbaugh wants an organization wholly committed to providing him the program support and personnel influence — but not necessarily roster autonomy — required to win as consistently as he did in Baltimore.

The coach also wants a quarterback he can grow older with. Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with a pure pocket passer, Joe Flacco, and he developed a dual-threat blur, Lamar Jackson, into a two-time league MVP. For Harbaugh, styles and skillsets at quarterback don’t matter as much as the burning daily desire to be great.

Giants interim head coach Mike Kafka will interview for the Buccaneers offensive coordinator vacancy as well as the Lions. Kafka has not interviewed for any of the other seven head coach vacancies, which is a strange twist after he was a candidate for head coach with eight franchises from 2023-25, including when he was a non-play-calling offensive coordinator.

Dan Graziano’s prediction for the next Giants coach: Jeff Hafley, Packers defensive coordinator. Hafley has been high on the Giants’ list for a while, according to what I’ve been told. I think New York will try very hard to get Harbaugh or Stefanski, and the Giants might land one of them. But I placed those guys elsewhere, and I had to make a pick for the Giants based on the rest of the pool.

Hafley has college head coach experience from Boston College, and his work with the Green Bay defense has earned him a lot of attention from NFL teams looking for a head coach. The Giants’ defense allowed 5.8 yards per play this season, tied for 26th. Hafley’s Packers were at 5.0, tied for eighth best.

Baldy: Defensive line depth an offseason priority

Jaxson Dart nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Year | Giants.com

Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is one of six finalists for the 2025 Pepsi Zero Sugar NFL Rookie of the Year Award. Dart led all rookie quarterbacks in rushing yards (487), rushing touchdowns (nine), and passer rating (91.7),

Dart is looking to become the third Giant to win it. Tight end Jeremy Shockey won the inaugural award in 2002 after being selected as the 14th overall draft pick. Sixteen years later, fans voted for running back Saquon Barkley, the second overall pick who went on to be named AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Not only has Wan’Dale Robinson proved he can complement Nabers, but he has also developed chemistry with Jaxson Dart throughout 2025. While it is possible the Giants could find a cheaper replacement for Robinson through free agency or the draft, that chemistry he has built with Dart is invaluable and would take time to rebuild with a new player.

Robinson’s price tag this offseason may be expensive; however, the Giants will need to at least consider paying it, as he could provide another piece of stability to build around next season.

New York Giants: Continue to build around Jaxson Dart. Jaxson Dart played reasonably well this season despite a crumbling supporting cast. Wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo should be healthy come next season, but New York needs to continue to add to its offense to support Dart. Perhaps a wide receiver like Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson or Ohio State’s Carnell Tate could be in the team’s crosshairs in the first round.

Family of former Giant Sam Beal says he’s been missing since July | New York Daily News

The family of former Giants Sam Beal wants help finding the missing defensive back who disappeared in July. A missing persons bulletin said the last person to hear from Beal was his girlfriend, who spoke to him by phone last summer. She says he told her he was headed home from Virginia Beach, where his girlfriend’s vehicle was located. Authorities found Beal’s shoes and socks on the car. They said there was sand on the floor.
