Mike Tomlin is stepping away from coaching after 19 years without a losing season as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Tomlin is expected to take the year off entirely, or to work in television, rather than seek a coaching job in this cycle.
This, of course, means that Tomlin will not enter the fray as a potential candidate for the current New York Giants head coaching vacancy.
Tomlin’s rights will be maintained by the Steelers as Pittsburgh did not fire him, and he could be a Sean Payton-like trade candidate should he choose to re-enter coaching in 2027.
Tomlin went 193-114-2 (.628 winning percentage) from 2006-2025 with the Steelers. He never had a losing season, with three 8-8 marks being the worst of his tenure.
Players in Pittsburgh are said to be in “disbelief” at the news. The Steelers issued the following statement:
The Steelers are now in need of just their fourth head coach since 1969.
The Giants, meanwhile are still hot on the trail of John Harbaugh and continuing to interview a large number of candidates in the event the former Baltimore Ravens coach turns them down.
