The Philadelphia Eagles earned the NFC East title and the No. 3 seed, and will play host in the first round of the 2026 NFL Playoffs to the No. 6 San Francisco 49ers, who went 12-5 and still didn’t win the NFC West.
The Eagles have one of the NFL’s most talented, and least productive, offenses, which stands in stark contrast to their consistently dominant defense.
The defense just churned out two new All-Pros in CB Quinyon Mitchell and slot corner Cooper DeJean — APC (All-Pro Coop) as A.J. Brown calls him — and has Jalen Carter back healthy upfront leading the way. Jalyx Hunt has been peaking at just the right time, and this is the best linebacker group the Eagles have had in years. One of the few weaknesses for this Vic Fangio defense has been stopping the run, which will be a big task against San Francisco’s Christian McCaffrey. But, if they can find a way to minimize his impact, the rest of the defense should be capable of stifling Purdy and company.
A bigger concern for the Eagles will be on offense and whether the offensive line will have Lane Johnson back. The former All-Pro right tackle has missed way more time than initially thought, and while he’s been largely expected to play, reports on Saturday suggested his Lisfranc injury might still be an issue. Without question the Eagles offense is more productive with Johnson on the field, but Fred Johnson has done a solid job replacing him, and lately it seems the problem has been closer to the middle of the line. Whatever the reason is, Philly’s offensive line isn’t even considered Top 10 in the league this season, and the drop-off has greatly impacted Saquon Barkley and the run game.
Without Barkley breaking free for explosive gains, and recording more and more negative runs, the Eagles passing game has struggled, too. Head coach Nick Sirianni promoted passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo to Offensive Coordinator this offseason, and there was surprisingly little carry over of their past successes.
Still, despite what many would consider disappointing performances throughout the season, the Eagles offense produced three 1,000-yard players — Barkley, Brown, and DeVonta Smith —, and Dallas Goedert set a new franchise record for touchdowns by a tight end with 11. The offense wouldn’t pass the eye test, but on paper they are exactly the team they were supposed to be.
All season long the Eagles have focused more on the fact that they were winning games and less on why they weren’t being efficient. People scoffed at the mentality, but in the playoffs, winning is truly all that matters.
As quarterback Jalen Hurts said this week, “We’re not going to be judged off of how it got done. We’re going to be judged off of if we did it or not.”
Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch the game.
