The Miami Dolphins are not messing around when it comes to getting their house in order. Just a day after the team announced the hiring of Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new general manager, they appear set for their first interview for their vacant head coaching position. According to Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins will hold an interview with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak on Saturday.
Under NFL rules, a head coaching interview with a coordinator of a playoff team on a bye during wild card week must be held virtually. The team can then request a second, in-person interview with that coordinator during the bye week before the Super Bowl if the coordinator advances that far. Miami will meet the initial requirement by interviewing Kubiak today.
Kubiak, the son of former Denver Broncos and Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, has coaching experience at both the college and NFL levels over the last 15 years. He started his career as an offensive quality control coach and graduate assistant at Texas A&M from 2010 through 2012, then worked as an offensive quality control coach for two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He returned to the college ranks in 2015 as a wide receivers coach for Kansas. In 2016 he joined the Broncos as an offensive assistant for three seasons, then returned to the Vikings as the quarterbacks coach in 2019. In 2021, he was promoted to the Vikings’ offensive coordinator position.
He returned to the Broncos in 2022 as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, then moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023 as their passing game coordinator. In 2024, he was named the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints before joining the Seahawks this year.
The Dolphins fired former head coach Mike McDaniel on Thursday, paving the way for Sullivan, after being hired on Friday, to lead the search for the team’s next head coach.
