The Miami Dolphins are not taking Saturday off this week, attacking their head coaching search a day after hiring Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new general manager. Earlier this morning, reports indicated the Dolphins had contacted former Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh about a possible interview next week. Then came a report that Miami was conducting a virtual interview with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak. Now comes news a legendary name could be in consideration for the job.
Miami has requested an interview with Chris Shula, the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator and grandson of Dolphins legendary head coach Don Shula. The elder Shula in the all-time winningest coach in NFL history with 347 victories; he is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The address for Hard Rock Stadium, the Dolphins’ home field, is 347 Don Shula Drive, recognizing the all-time great that was Don.
Chris’s father is former Dolphins wide receivers and quarterbacks coach Dave Shula, who served as the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals from 1992 through 1996.
Could his grandson find himself patrolling the same sidelines? Would the expectations from fans be too high?
Chris Shula started his coaching career in 2010 as an assistant linebackers coach at Ball State. After a two-year stint at Indiana as a graduate assistant and a year as the defensive coordinator at John Carroll, Shula entered the NFL as a defensive quality control coach for the San Diego Chargers in 2015. He moved over to the Rams in 2017, initially working as an assistant linebackers coach. On his way to being named the team’s defensive coordinator in 2024, he has worked as the outside linebackers coach, linebacker coach, passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, and pass rush coordinator and linebackers coach.
The Rams were tenth in scoring defense this season, averaging 20.4 points per game allowed.
The Rams face the Carolina Panthers today as part of the NFL playoffs’ Wild Card Weekend. If they win and advance to next week’s divisional round, Shula would be eligible to conduct interviews during the week.
