Giants news, 1/9: Coaching search, Jaxson Dart, Evan Neal, Russell Wilson

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

The Kevin Stefanski success story that could make him a Giants match | New York Post

One topic that was sure to come up in both settings — other than whether or not Stefanski might be able to bring top-notch defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz with him from Cleveland — was his development plan for Dart.

“I think it would be a really good fit,” one NFL source familiar with Stefanski told The Post. “Baker Mayfield had success underneath him, and he has a similar style to Jaxson. They are both really good from the pocket, but they can make some really heroic plays running around outside the pocket, and throw very well on the run…Kevin has a great football brain, he doesn’t get rattled, and he has great insight about people. He’s a really good leader with a very clear vision of what he wants done.”

Coaches with Harbaugh’s resume don’t reach the open market, especially at his age. Harbaugh is the dream hire for Giants owners who have been seeking a culture-setting winner since Coughlin’s unceremonious exit after the 2015 season.

Harbaugh’s 180 career wins rank 14th in NFL history. He has 11 seasons with double-digit wins. He has succeeded with different coaching staffs, different style quarterbacks and different roster strengths. Harbaugh would instantly command respect when he steps into the Giants’ building, and that’s desperately needed for a locker room with talent that has lacked leadership.

5 Things That Went Right for NY Giants in 2025 Season | SI.com

Before the start of this season, the Giants had repeatedly run into a wall trying to find answers to their poor offensive line protection. They finally established the right core in the second year under the tutelage of offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo.

After Andrew Thomas returned and Jaxson Dart took over the reins in Week 4, the Giants’ pass blocking shot up and would eventually finish the season ranked 11th in win rate after hanging near the basement of the league (No. 26) at the end of the 2024 campaign. The unit allowed 45 total sacks on the season, which was only a slight drop from the 48 sacks that opponents totaled last season, but much of that could be attributed to having a rookie quarterback in Dart who was learning when to get rid of the football early and not impact the success of his offense.

Now representing Neal, AMDG Sports — founded by former Pro Bowl offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley — announced that the 25-year-old will train with Bentley this offseason to “to reframe his career through honest evaluation, elite development, and sustained performance.”

Russell Wilson swaps agents, ‘not blinking’ on playing in NFL | ESPN.com

New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson said Monday that he fully intends to play next season. In preparation for free agency, he also recently switched to Athletes First superagent David Mulugheta, according to NFLPA records.

Wilson had worked with longtime agent Mark Rodgers since entering the league in 2012. He is set to become a free agent in March. Mulugheta represents several high-profile pass-throwers including Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson, the Houston Texans’ C.J. Stroud and the New York Jets’ Justin Fields, among a host of other top players around the league.

Top 25 NFL rookies of 2025: Ranking the best first-year standouts | NFL.com

6. Abdul Carter. Some folks undoubtedly feel this ranking is too high, given Carter’s underwhelming sack total. I actually think it’s too low, given Carter’s overwhelming talent. The No. 3 overall pick isn’t without warts, of course, especially considering he was benched on two separate occasions for behavior that his teammate Dexter Lawrence called “hard-headed.”

Sexy Dexy’s right: Carter must eliminate the nonsense, or he’ll sabotage a skill set that jumps off the screen. For what it’s worth, the rookie logged 3.5 of his four sacks after the second benching. That’s the kind of response you want to see from a 22-year-old with rare ability. The 6-3, 252-pounder boasts explosiveness you can’t teach. Nothing exhibits this better than Carter’s 48 quick pressures (under 2.5 seconds), the highest total in the entire league.

19. Jaxson Dart. Dart drips moxie. He’s a playmaker with his arm and legs, as best evidenced by a dynamic prime-time performance alongside fellow rookie Cam Skattebo in a shocking October beatdown of the Eagles. So, why do I only have him as the third-best rookie QB and 19th overall player on this list? Because I’m afraid he doesn’t know how to — or worse yet, doesn’t care to — protect himself. The 6-2, 223-pounder became far too familiar with the blue tent in Year 1, and despite all the carnage, he repeatedly scoffed at any suggestion that he needed to change his play style. This is not sustainable, and I hope New York’s next coach can help him understand that. If he can stay upright and continue to hone the finer points of quarterbacking, Dart has the makeup of a really fun player.

One reason for each NFL non-playoff team to be optimistic | CBSSports.com

New York Giants. New York’s roster, as a whole, may need some work, but there are foundational pieces. With a full offseason entrenched as the starter, the team will be able to properly evaluate Jaxson Dart as a viable starting quarterback. He had some success upon initially joining the starting lineup but injuries and leadership changes brought the operation back down to earth.

Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo should be fully recovered in 2026. Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, Kayvon Thibodeaux and Dexter Lawrence form one of the league’s best defensive lines on paper. They also have a top-5 overall selection, which could be propositioned to the highest bidder and bring back an even larger return or, at minimum, lead to the addition of another blue-chip talent.

The NFL has filed a petition with the United States Supreme Court as to the question of whether the civil action filed in February 2022 by former Dolphins coach (and current Vikings defensive coordinator) Brian Flores against the NFL, the Dolphins, the Giants, the Broncos, and the Texans will be resolved in court, or in arbitration.

The specific legal question presented to the Supreme Court is this: “Whether an arbitration agreement governing disputes in a professional sports league is categorically unenforceable under the Federal Arbitration Act because it designates the league commissioner as the default arbitrator and permits the commissioner to develop arbitral procedures.”
