Since John Harbaugh was fired on Monday by the Baltimore Ravens, there have been reports that multiple teams who did not have head coaching vacancies would fire their current head coaches if they thought they could bring in Harbaugh.
It isn’t hard to think the Miami Dolphins, who fired head coach Mike McDaniel on Thursday, fit into that category.
The Palm Beach Post reported even before the McDaniel firing that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has a history of pursuing both John and Jim Harbaugh. Jim Harbaugh is, of course, currently coaching the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Post wrote:
Ross’ respect for John Harbaugh also ran deep. In 2019, before Ross replaced Adam Gase with Brian Flores, The Post, citing an informed source, reported that Ross had a “burning interest” in John Harbaugh.
Media speculation at the time was that Ross might pursue Harbaugh if the Ravens didn’t extend his contract. Months after Harbaugh signed an extension, the Ravens opened the season against the Dolphins. Speaking to South Florida reporters before that game, Harbaugh said neither he nor his agent had contact with the Dolphins while his future hung in the balance.
Josina Anderson reported before McDaniel’s firing that the Dolphins had been “in touch” regarding Harbaugh’s interest in the Miami job.
The Dolphins are also searching for a new general manager. One of the team’s four finalists, Chad Alexander, worked under Ozzie Newsome with the Baltimore Ravens for 20 years. That means Alexander, currently assistant general manager of the Chargers (coached by Jim Harbaugh) has a direct connection to John Harbaugh.
So, the Dolphins could be a serious competitor for Harbaugh.
