The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced three transactions on Tuesday afternoon. Here’s an overview:
- DB Brandon Johnson was placed on the practice squad injured list.
- DB Parry Nickerson was signed to the practice squad.
- CB Ambry Thomas was released from the practice squad.
Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.
BRANDON JOHNSON
Johnson suffered an ankle injury while making a start at safety against the Washington Commanders in Week 18. The undrafted rookie had been temporarily elevated from the practice squad for the third straight game. The Eagles were previously elevating Andre’ Sam to provide more depth at safety and help out on special teams but he met his regular season limit of the maximum three elevations. That’s when they turned to Johnson.
Now that the playoffs are here, teams are free to temporarily elevate up to two players from the practice squad for each game without a restriction on the number of times a player can be elevated. We’ll see how they handle that but Johnson won’t be in the mix since he’s being placed on the practice squad injured list, which is essentially like injured reserve for PS players.
PARRY NICKERSON
Here’s a recap of the transactions Nickerson has been involved in dating back to the end of training camp:
- August 26, 2025 — Released by the Eagles.
- August 27, 2025 — Signed to the practice squad.
- September 24, 2025 — Signed to the active roster.
- October 27, 2025 — Released by the Eagles.
- October 28, 2025 — Signed to the practice squad.
- December 2, 2025 — Released by the Eagles.
Now the 31-year-old journeyman is back again.
Nickerson was released by the Eagles in late October to make room for the Michael Carter trade acquisition. The Eagles clearly saw Carter as an upgrade in that dime package defender/backup nickel cornerback/depth safety role. But with Johnson now hurt, the Eagles wanted to add some more depth for that multi-role. Nickerson previously played 12 defensive snaps and 60 special teams snaps with the Eagles earlier this season.
AMBRY THOMAS
The former San Francisco 49ers starting cornerback has been on the Eagles’ practice squad for the entire 2025 season, save for him getting cut once and then re-signing the next day in mid-November. Maybe the team is worried about a spy in their midst since they’re playing the Niners this weekend?!
Mostly kidding but curious that they chose now to part ways with Thomas. The Eagles now have an open practice squad spot to fill.
In other news, the 49ers signed former Eagles starting linebacker Kyzir White to help out since San Francisco is so banged up at that position. The 29-year-old spent most of the 2025 season on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad before they cut him on December 8.
