NFL Black Monday is upon us.
There’s a lot of news about firings (see: Jonathan Gannon axed) … but there’s also news about who’s being retained.
On that subject, the Philadelphia Eagles are likely happy to see that the New York Giants are not parting ways with general manager Joe Schoen.
The G-Men are 22-45-1 since Schoen was hired in 2022. Only five teams have a worse record during that span:
- Arizona Cardinals: 19-49
- Tennessee Titans: 19-49
- Las Vegas Raiders: 21-47
- New York Jets: 22-46
- Carolina Panthers: 22-46
The Giants have the second-worst record since 2023 (13-38, one game ahead of the 12-39 Titans) and they’re tied with the Raiders for the second-worst record since 2024 (7-27, one game ahead of the 6-28 Titans).
There’s apparently this idea that New York’s roster isn’t actually all that bad; it’s just the coaching that’s hampered them. At least, that’s what their actions tell us since they fired Brian Daboll while keeping Schoen.
Between retaining Schoen and dropping from the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft to the No. 5 pick over the last two weeks, the Giants are hampering their chances of turning things around.
The feeling here is that the Giants would’ve been best served by losing out and wiping the slate clean: new quarterback at No. 1, new head coach, new general manager. At the very least, it would’ve given them a chance to get everyone on the same page. Now they’ll be hiring a head coach who didn’t draft Jaxson Dart. And if they don’t succeed, it could be Schoen who gets fired and now there’s a head coach and quarterback without ties to the GM. The Giants have been plagued by this lack of cohesion for years now.
And while it’s bad for them, it’s good for the Eagles.
