The Miami Dolphins have officially kicked off the search for their next general manager, replacing Chris Grier, who was let go by the team during the season. The Dolphins have been constructing a list of potential targets for the job, and on Monday, the day after the 2025 regular season ended, the team initiated requests for interviews.
Update: San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager RJ Gillen has been added to the list of GM candidates for the Dolphins. The 2025 season was Gillen’s first as the AGM, but his 11th season with San Francisco. He has previously worked as a scouting assistant, a pro personnel scout, the director of pro personnel, and the director of player personnel.
Miami has requested interviews with the Green Bay Packers’ Vice President of Player Personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Sullivan joined the Packers in 2003 as a training camp intern before becoming part of the front office in 2004. He has worked his way from serving as a regional scout to director of college scouting and co-director of player personnel. He assumed the role of VP of Player Personnel in 2022.
Pelissero added that Miami has also requested an interview with Philadelphia Eagles Assistant General Manager Alec Halaby. Halaby joined the Eagles in 2007 an intern, then was hired as a player personnel assistant in 2010. He has named the Assistant GM in 2022.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter added San Francisco 49ers Director of Scouting and Football Operations Josh Williams to Miami’s list as well. Williams has been with the 49ers for 14 years and was promoted into his current role for this season. He has previously served as a scout at the national and regional levels.
Miami also has asked for an interview with Los Angeles Rams Assistant General Manager John McKay, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. McKay joined the Rams in 2016 as a scouting assistant. He has served as the assistant director of player personnel and the director of player personnel in his 10 seasons with the Rams before being named the Assistant GM this year.
Pelissero reported the Dolphins requesting an interview with 49ers Vice President of Player Personnel Tariq Ahmad, as well. Ahmad joined the 49ers in 2014 as a scouting assistant before time as a regional scout and the director of college scouting. He spent two years as the director of player personnel before being named the VP of Player Personnel this season.
The Dolphins are expected to cast a wide net this year as they look for a new GM for the first time since 2016. Interim GM Champ Kelly is also believed to be in consideration for the position. The team has not commented on the status of head coach Mike McDaniel for 2026.
