Stats are for losers. That quote has been echoed by countless coaches, players, owners, and team personnel throughout NFL history. With the season lost, we have time before the final game to focus on stats rather than what truly matters.
Justin Jefferson is 53 yards short of 1,000 yards for the season. It’s a milestone he has achieved his first 5 seasons in the NFL. Normally, you’d not even think twice about him going over that low total, but it’s been that kind of year. Inconsistent QB play, drops, and overall team struggles have kept Jefferson relatively quiet this season. Coming into the year he was thought of as QB proof after what he did in 2023.
My immediate reaction is that it doesn’t matter. However, I was reminded how much it does when Kevin Williams’ name popped up on the Hall of Fame finalists yesterday. Continuing a streak, putting up numbers, and longevity matter. Hall of Fame players show up every year. It hasn’t been the best year and Jefferson is still likely going over 1,000 yards. We’ve seen Mike Evans’ streak go down this year at 11 seasons to start his career. If Jefferson wants to match or beat that record, he’ll need to catch a few balls from Max Brosmer on Sunday. It’s not the most important thing, but it does matter a little, to most of us.
