Before the 2025 Detroit Lions season began, many wondered how the team would look after losing both coordinators to head coaching jobs. Many warned of a potential “brain drain” in Detroit, and when Frank Ragnow suddenly retired in May, offensive line concerns were just as large—if not larger—than that of the coaching staff losses.
One common comparison people made in the offseason was to the 2023 Philadelphia Eagles. After losing offensive coordinator Shane Steichen and defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon to head coaching gigs, the Eagle went from Super Bowl runner up to an 11-6 team that finished the season losing six of their last seven games, including a Wild Card spanking at the hands of the Buccaneers.
It’s not a perfect one-to-one comparison of what happened to Detroit, but it’s a good reminder that Super Bowl contenders can fall in a hurry. Now the question is this: can the 2026 Lions become the 2024 Eagles?
After making changes at both coordinator positions, the Eagles immediately jumped back into contention and won themselves a Super Bowl.
On this week’s PODcast, we discuss what the Lions need to do to follow the same Eagles trajectory. Do they need to make changes at both coordinator positions? What kind of personnel moves do they need to make? And do they have enough resources in free agency and the draft to fill all the necessary holes of a Super Bowl contending roster?
We also discuss the loss to the Vikings and Netflix’s horrible broadcast.
