Week 16 of the NFL season kicks off on Thursday evening. It feels like it was just the preseason a week or so ago. Before we get into that on-field action, I solicited some Eagles questions on Bluesky for a fresh mailbag.
Let’s get after it…
@anthonypaparo.bsky.social: On a scale of 1-10, how comfortable are you trading AJ Brown this offseason to pay some of our defenders and rocking with Smitty as our #1 WR?
I’ll say a seven. A divorce feels inevitable simply from reading the tea leaves this season even if the Eagles were to go on to win back-to-back championships. The cap ramifications of trading Brown in the middle of this season were nonsensical. It would still be costly to deal him come the offseason, but it would be a bit more palatable.
Trade Brown for a couple of picks, go offensive line on Day 1 of the NFL Draft, nab a receiver on Day 2 and go from there to refresh the offense. I’d be fine with that.
The defense is so loaded on talent, so, yes, there are plenty of big paydays on the way on that side of the ball!
Even if the Eagles were to flame out this winter in the playoffs, the Brown era would go down as a remarkable success. They’d have made two Super Bowls, won one and he’d have at least three, and possible four, 1,000-yard seasons. Bringing Brown to Philly in 2022 just might be the best trade in franchise history. Things happen though!
@swanlynntanze.bsky.social: Would you take an Eagles Super Bowl win this year if it meant that next year the Eagles would lose to the Cowboys in the NFC title game, and the Cowboys would go on to win the Super Bowl?
Phenomenal question for a sick man.
If the Eagles had never won a Super Bowl, I’d say yes. Given that I’ve seen two parades in under a decade, however, I’m leaning no just because I enjoy the Cowboys’ futility so much.
Let’s live to fight another day in 2027, shall we?
@patgallen.bsky.social: Where would a midnight green jersey & midnight green pants combo rank among all possible combinations?
It’s been 23 years. Bring them back! Here are my rankings:
- White jerseys, Midnight Green pants
- Kelly Green jerseys, silver pants
- Midnight Green jerseys, Midnight Green pants
- Midnight Green jerseys, white pants
- Black jerseys, black pants
- White jerseys, black pants
- White jerseys, white pants
@patgallen.bsky.social: If the Eagles defense was a current band, which would it be?
If they were a historic band, I’d say 1983 Metallica. They’re playing with a mix of heavy metal and punk that’s unmatched. Unsurprisingly, I’ll listen to the band’s Kill ‘Em All on vinyl on gameday sometimes.
For a current act, how about Turnstile? They have hardcore roots. That lends itself to the ferocity that players like Nakobe Dean, Cooper DeJean and Zack Baun carry themselves with out there on the field while destroying opponents. Turnstile is also getting a bit poppier as they reach more and more mainstream success, so, in a way, you can say that this Eagles defense is no longer under the radar after only a serviceable beginning, by their championship standards, to start the 2025 season. Everyone knows who they are and everyone knows they’re a force to be reckoned with when the ball is snapped.
Philadelphia’s own Will Yip has worked with them extensively as a producer as well, so that adds some local flair as well, right?
@brian215.bsky.social: To where, exactly, are we telling the Birds to go?
To Santa Clara for Super Bowl LX.
