A short time ago, ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed that the Miami Dolphins would be benching starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after the team’s dreadful 28-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead of Tua at the helm, owner Stephen Ross, interim general manager Champ Kelly, and head coach Mike McDaniel will get an up-close look at what rookie QB Quinn Ewers brings to the table.
Starting Ewers, however, isn’t the only move the Dolphins made today to prepare for the future of the franchise, and the youth movement that is imminent.
According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins are releasing veteran pass-rusher Matthew Judon. The 33-year-old outside linebacker will now go on waivers, with the hopes of landing with a playoff contender.
Judon was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the fifth round (146th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft. He would play five years in Baltimore before signing with the New England Patriots before the 2021 NFL season.
During his time in Baltimore and New England (8 seasons), Judon started 80 of 110 games, recording 356 total tackles, 82 tackles for loss, 62.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles, 14 pass breakups, and 156 QB hits. He made four Pro Bowls and was one of the NFL’s top pass-rushers.
Judon was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2024 in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick. He signed a one-year deal with the Dolphins worth $6 million in August 2025.
This season, Judon has started 3 out of 13 games for Miami, recording only 19 tackles (1 tackle for loss) and zero sacks.
Moving on from Judon will allow the Dolphins to get a closer look at some of the younger players, while also making it crystal clear the team needs to find EDGE rushers this offseason, something we may not have even fathomed a few years ago.
