Giants news, 12/17: Views of the Giants, Jalin Hyatt roasted, more

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

One intriguing offensive coordinator possibility — Mike McDaniel, if the Dolphins fire him. Their season hasn’t spiraled as expected, but they won’t make the playoffs and could finish 6-11.

McDaniel has overlapped with Hafley. In 2014, McDaniel coached the Browns’ wide receivers, while Hafley coached their defensive backs. Then, from 2016-18, Hafley had that same job with the 49ers. For the last two of those seasons, McDaniel was their run game coordinator.

Boomer: Giants rebuild could be quick

Mike Kafka was considered an up-and-coming offensive coordinator and a strong candidate at some point to get hired somewhere as an NFL head coach. That was before the events of the past month.

Giants’ coaching job not as attractive if Joe Schoen stays as GM | New York Daily News

But this is more than a problem that needs to be fixed. This is an indictment of Schoen’s ability to build a roster. It is evidence that, after four years, Schoen has left the depth of his roster in a pitiful state. It is proof that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Because even if a prospective head coach can get excited about Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo and a top three pick in April’s NFL Draft, it is impossible to look at this roster’s shortcomings and feel comfortable being paired with the protected incumbent Schoen. The GM simply has not demonstrated that he knows how to correct obvious problems that lead to losses.

Extension candidate: Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson. He’s the Giants’ top receiver this season and was a second-round pick in 2022. Robinson has proven this season that he can play inside and outside, though he leads all receivers with 505 yards out of the slot. But he could be costly after Buffalo’s Khalil Shakir signed a deal worth up to $15 million per year this past offseason. But the Giants can’t afford to lose any playmaker as they try to build around quarterback Jaxson Dart.

Giants only have $7 million in cap space going into 2026

David Tyree wants Giants to sit Jaxson Dart with ‘risks’ mounting | New York Post

“I’ve personally been heavy on sitting Jaxson Dart ever since I saw Jameis Winston [play],” said Tyree on The Post’s “Blue Rush” podcast. “I think the thought process the Giants had at the beginning of the season was the right game plan. Get a young, talented quarterback in and allow him to actually sit and learn…“And I think they need to sit Jaxson Dart in light of what we’ve seen. The positives, we’ve seen enough positives. We know that we actually have something special brewing. The risks are too great at this point, in light of what the Giants are paying for it. You’re paying these backup quarterbacks, put them out there and give them a chance to continue their careers in the National Football League. I think to those types of front office decisions where is this just about us trying to get a win? So [interim coach Mike] Kafka is in there, you got [GM Joe] Schoen in there, you got hard decisions to make. So sit Jaxson Dart’s behind down, so he can be the future of the franchise.”

Abdul Carter’s ‘statement’ leaves NY Giants eager to see what’s next | The Record

Michael Strahan used to tell anyone who would listen that defensive players in the NFL, for the most part, could not win on talent alone.

There was a science to the success Strahan found with the New York Giants, a process by which he learned how to beat opponents by watching their movements, studying their tendencies and eventually, on game day, exploiting them with every part of his game.

On Sunday, the No. 3 overall draft pick recorded seven tackles (three for loss), two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a sack. His three tackles for loss are tied for the most by a Giants rookie since they became an official statistic in 1999. Fellow outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux was the last Giants rookie to accomplish this feat on Dec. 18, 2022, also against Washington.

Carter became the first Giants rookie to record two forced fumbles in a single game since defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul in 2010. Before Carter’s performance, the last rookie league-wide to record at least two forced fumbles and three tackles for loss in the same game was Titans defensive tackle Jason Jones in 2008.

Which top players will Giants target in NFL Draft? Dane Brugler breaks down the options | The Athletic

Before we dive into the players he likes for the Giants, however, we should mention that Brugler’s thoughts also came with an important caveat: “Here is an unfortunate truth about the 2026 NFL Draft: It is extremely underwhelming in the top-15 picks. There are good players at the top of this class, don’t get me wrong. But relative to most drafts, this year won’t match up at the top.”

Despite the lack of top-tier talent, as Brugler said, there will still be good players available, so let’s see who could be a fit with the Giants. We’ll go in order of the positions you highlighted as the Giants’ top priority.

5. New York Giants (via New York Jets): Arvell Reese, LB, Ohio State With the first of two picks the Giants receive in the hypothetical trade with the Jets, New York bolsters their defensive front with Arvell Reese, arguably the best overall player in the class. After playing in an off-ball role last year, Reese shifted to the edge to boost Ohio State’s pass-rushing group. He’d fit in well on a roster that badly needs defensive help. The second pick from the Jets (18th overall) would USC WR Makai Lemon.

This week’s opponent

Vikes Views: The Minnesota Vikings and J.J. McCarthy: Real Improvement or Weak Opponents? | Daily Norseman

The Vikings have faced two of the league’s worst defenses in recent weeks. McCarthy has enjoyed plenty of time to throw and receivers running wide open. Still, he’s not fully in sync with Justin Jefferson—partly due to McCarthy’s inconsistency and partly Jefferson’s drops. They need to figure that out.

McCarthy’s mechanics remain poor, as noted several times on the broadcast. This has led to inconsistent ball placement. The recent success might just look better because the opponents are that bad.

Vikings linebacker Jonathan Greenard will miss the rest of the season with a left shoulder injury, coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday. Greenard aggravated the injury in Sunday night’s 34-26 victory over the Cowboys and will require surgery.

“It was something he was playing through,” O’Connell said. “He knew he would not be able to put this behind him until probably he got it fixed, whenever that was going to be. And just looking at coming out of [Sunday night] and aggravating it and just it feels like the best time to do that now.”
