In a week full of surprises that even a Hollywood script writer wouldn’t have thought believable, Ian Rapoport is reporting that the unthinkable is happening tomorrow:
Philip Rivers will start at quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts in 2025 against the vaunted Seattle Seahawks defense. This time last week Colts fans knew their playoff hopes were dwindling after the franchises best start since 2011. Everyone expected it to be a battle led by Daniel Jones. What no one expected was that Jones would tear his Achilles and that Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen would need to scramble to fill a need at quarterback.
Somehow even fewer expected them to turn to a long retired veteran quarterback to try to get them through the murderers row that is their final four contests. The rumor of Philip Rivers return was shocking. The Monday evening workout was shocking. The practice squad signing was shocking. The reports of Rivers being prepared to start was shocking and now the report that Shane Steichen intends to start the 44 year old grandfather against the Seahawks tomorrow is just the next bit of shocking news that has been one of the most interesting weeks in Indianapolis Colts history.
The only thing left now is for Rivers to take the field wearing the number 17 jersey that Daniel Jones wore just six days ago. We will see how this experiment goes, how the team responds to the old man and how Rivers himself plays after a five year hiatus from pro-football.
The only thing that could shock me now, is if Philip Rivers is somehow still good at football.
Time will tell.
