On Wednesday, Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley offered a little more insight into the crazy week that included Frank Ragnow coming out of retirement only to go back into retirement upon failing his physical. The All-Pro center was revealed to have had a Grade 3 hamstring spain that would have prevented him from playing in 2025 anyways.
According to Fraley, Ragnow was training the entire time, and the injury occurred then.
“Unfortunately, he got a little nicked up in his training. He’s been training the whole time,” Fraley said. “[…] but unfortunately it didn’t go that route. I’m not disappointed at all, it’s just unfortunately he had that–what was it? A grade three or whatever it turned out to be. He just thought it was a little tweak, so that’s how tough he was, and that’s how tough he was when he played here.”
It remains unclear if Ragnow has any interest in returning to football in the future, but Fraley said he believes the 29-year-old center “has plenty in him to still play.” And if he ever expresses that desire to come back through that tunnel in Honolulu Blue, Fraley would be welcoming him back with open arms.
“If he wanted to be back, though, that door is open,” Fraley said.
Ragnow has remained silent since the ordeal right around Thanksgiving. He has yet to have any sort of media appearance, nor has he made a post on social media since he was taken off—then put back on—the reserve/retired list. And the Lions have publicly said they have not had any of those conversations with Ragnow.
“Nothing was discussed past the news that you guys just got,“ coach Dan Campbell said.
