Colts are having a “break glass in case of emergency” moment

Philip Rivers…

This is where we are right now? The Indianapolis Colts are seriously considering a 44-year old quarterback who has been retired almost five years? Oh, and he is a grandpa. Are there any other grandpas in the NFL? The craziest part about the Colts bringing him in for a workout is that it could actually be the best option on the table right now. Regardless, this move reeks of desperation and shows a true emergency moment for the franchise. If this goes through and Rivers decides to tie ‘em up one more time, one can’t help but wonder how this will all turn out.

I don’t care what connections he has. I don’t care about the link to Shane Steichen or his tenure with the Colts. None of that matters. That is history, ancient history in football years. This isn’t LeBron James coming back to Cleveland. There was plenty left in that tank. Tom Brady played until he was 45. That is incredibly old for NFL standards, but he was playing that whole time. He had offseasons, prep time to study the playbook and make connections with his teammates, and was in the flow of the game the entire time. Rivers would be coming off a 4-5 year hiatus. As good as he was, do we really think he can walk on to any team and just make it work?

I would love to be proven wrong, but fans who are encouraged by this move are clinging to anything they think will save this season. Free-falling the way the Colts are is a tough pill to swallow. This team still has a lot of talent on it and could compete. Seeing it dissolve in front of our eyes can make people desperate. I present no other alternatives that can dig the Colts out of their current predicament, but that doesn’t mean Rivers is the answer either. It most likely means there is no answer. Batman isn’t coming to save this team.

Sign Philips Rivers. What is there to lose? I have no qualms about it, but I can’t be convinced he is going to be successful. I hope I am wrong but situationally, shades of Kerry Collins keep popping up in my head. Rivers seems like he would be risking his health and well-being by being thrown out there, but he is coming in for a workout for a reason. If there wasn’t some desire, he would simply stay home. Rivers dragging the Colts to the playoffs and going on a playoff run would be a dream. That’s the thing about dreams though; they simply aren’t reality.
