Former Eagles players have had a tough year in terms of injuries, with more than a handful of Philly alumni ending their 2025 NFL season early due to a variety of issues. It was Carson Wentz’s shoulder a month ago, and on Sunday against the Vikings, it was his former teammate and best friend, Zach Ertz possibly tearing his ACL. Further testing is underway to confirm, but Commanders head coach Dan Quinn wasn’t optimistic. UPDATE: Confirmation is here.
Ertz went up to make a catch, thrown by former Eagles QB Marcus Mariota, and safety Jay Ward made a nasty hit on the tight end, bending his right knee the opposite direction. The TE was emotional as he was helped off the field, and eventually carted to the locker room. Aside from the immense pain he was surely feeling, Ertz may have also been thinking about how this season-ending injury will affect his career and whether or not retirement is his next move.
Ertz was a reliable contributor for Washington’s offense the past few seasons and was a frequent target in the red zone. The Commanders were officially knocked out of playoff contention with their Week 14 loss to the Vikings, and it’s a shame that Ertz’s season had to end like this.
The 13-year veteran tight end is still thought of highly in and around the Eagles organization, and is still committed to his efforts in the Philadelphia community, even after bouncing around to a few teams.
Best wishes to Ertz as he focuses on his recovery and whatever his next steps might be.
