The Philadelphia Eagles officially made two announcements on Sunday afternoon. Here’s an overview:
- WR/RS Xavier Gipson was waived.
- OT Myles Hinton was downgraded from questionable to OUT on the injury report.
Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.
XAVIER GIPSON
It’s surprising that the Eagles didn’t waive Gipson sooner after he made an unconscionable decision to return a punt from Philly’s own 2-yard line … and then fumble the ball away on his ill-advised return … during the team’s Week 12 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Gipson suffered a shoulder injury on that play, however, and missed Week 13 because of it. He returned to practice this week, demonstrating that he’s no longer injured and thus easier to cut ties with.
If Gipson clears waivers, perhaps they’ll bring him back on the practice squad. But there’s really no good reason to do so since he’s proven untrustworthy.
Britain Covey, who was signed from the practice squad to the roster last week, will replace Gipson’s role as a returner on both punts and kicks. He also helps to provide depth at wide receiver.
Gipson’s departure gives the Eagles an open roster spot to fill. The team will likely activate Marcus Epps from injured reserve to start at safety against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Eagles have until 4:00 PM Eastern on Monday to make that move (or not).
MYLES HINTON
Hinton’s 21-day practice window to return from injured reserve is set to expire this coming week. The Eagles have to either 1) activate him to the roster or 2) shut him down for the season (just like they recently did with Willie Lampkin). The guess here is that the rookie Hinton will be shut down, especially with Lane Johnson potentially set to return as soon as next weekend.
