Brian Branch injury update: Detroit Lions safety on crutches

The Detroit Lions’ win over the Dallas Cowboys came at a price. Late in the game, after the Lions made a key defensive stop in the red zone, Lions safety Brian Branch suffered an ankle injury. The All-Pro defender was down for quite some time, and when he finally was able to walk off the field under some assistance, he moved very slowly and only walked a few feet off the field. The rest of the way, Branch was carted off the field.

In his post-game press conference, Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell didn’t offer any real update, only noting that they’ll know more in the following days. When asked if there’s any concern for a long-term injury, Campbell said yes.

“Yeah, I mean, he didn’t finish the game. But there again, I’ll know more tomorrow,” Campbell said.

In the locker room. Detroit Free Press reporter Carlos Monarrez reportedly saw Branch in a walking boot and crutches after the game.

Unfortunately, it appears it could be a worst-case scenario injury, as Tom Pelissero is reporting the Lions fear it’s an Achilles injury for Branch, but there are more tests to be had.

It’s worth noting that a walking boot is often used as a precautionary tool for most leg/foot/ankle injuries after the game, so it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a severe injury. Then again, the crutches are not a particularly good sign.

Since Week 12, Branch has been on the injury report with a toe or ankle injury. It’s unclear if this is an aggravation of the same injury or even if it’s the same leg.

Branch wasn’t the only safety the Lions lost on Thursday. Thomas Harper suffered a concussion on the first defensive drive and was out for the remainder of the game. With Detroit already down Kerby Joseph, by the end of the game, the Lions were down to their #4 and #5 safety: Avonte Maddox and Daniel Thomas.

The good news for Detroit is that their next game isn’t for another 10 games. They play on December 14 on a road trip against the Los Angeles Rams.
