The Miami Dolphins re-signed offensive lineman Kion Smith on Tuesday, this time to the practice squad — bringing back the 27-year-old after cutting him and tight end Hayden Rucci to make room for the returns of tight end Darren Waller and right tackle Austin Jackson late last week.
Rucci was claimed by the Detroit Lions yesterday, however Miami was able to hold onto Smith after he cleared waivers.
Smith originally signed with Miami all the way back in September of 2021 after the undrafted rookie did not make the Atlanta Falcons 53-man roster. He spent that season on the team’s practice squad. He didn’t see regular season game action with the Dolphins until 2023 — a year in which he played in nine games for Miami while playing 70 offensive snaps and 45 special teams snaps.
This season, Smith has appeared in 11 games with the Dolphins, starting two at the right guard spot.
To make room for the return of Smith, the Dolphins released another offensive lineman, Braeden Daniels, from the practice squad. Daniels was a former fourth-round selection of the Washington Commanders in the 2023 NFL Draft. He did not appear in a regular season game during his one season (2025) with the Dolphins.
