Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown injury update: Detroit gets good news

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Detroit Lions have gotten relatively good news when it comes to the health of wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. Per Pelissero, St. Brown is believed to have suffered a low-ankle sprain, which is better than the alternative of a high-ankle sprain. He later added that St. Brown is not expected to go on injured reserve and will be considered “week-to-week.”

St. Brown suffered the injury during the first quarter of the Lions’ loss to the Green Bay Packers. On the play, he was engaged as a blocker when he got rolled up on by teammates Kayode Awosika and Trystan Colon:

After the game, Lions coach Dan Campbell also expressed some limited optimism about the injury, suggesting the Lions star receiver may only miss a game or two, if they’re lucky.

“I don’t feel like this is long, long-term,” Campbell said. “So that’s the good news, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be here for—could be a week or two, maybe if we are lucky.”

The other fortunate news is that the Lions have some space between their next games. While they’ll have a pivotal matchup against the Dallas Cowboys next week on Thursday, after that, they’ll have a mini-bye week before they head to Los Angeles for an NFC showdown against the Rams. As of this publication, that game is still 16 days away.

St. Brown currently leads the Lions with 75 catches, 884 yards, and nine receiving touchdowns. Without St. Brown, the Lions offense was able to move the ball pretty well against a stout Packers defense on Thursday. Jameson Williams stepped up with seven catches for 144 yards and a score, while rookie Isaac TeSlaa and veteran Tom Kennedy also made a few plays in big moments.

St. Brown isn’t the only Lions receiver currently dealing with an ankle injury. Veteran Kalif Raymond missed the Thanksgiving game with an ankle injury of his own. It’s unclear if Raymond will return for this upcoming game against the Cowboys. If not, the Lions may need to add reinforcements to the receiving position—especially with the team already down tight end Sam LaPorta to season-ending back surgery.
