The quarterback situation for the Minnesota Vikings has just gotten a lot more complicated.
During his Monday morning press conference, head coach Kevin O’Connell told reporters that quarterback J.J. McCarthy is now in the league’s concussion protocol, and that it’s “too early to tell” who the team’s quarterback will be when the team travels to the West Coast this Sunday to take on the Seattle Seahawks.
McCarthy played the entire game at Lambeau Field on Sunday when the Vikings lost to the Green Bay Packers, 23-6. O’Connell said that McCarthy presented concussion symptoms on the flight home last night and was examined by team medical personnel, who decided to put him into the protocol.
I believe that each NFL game is supposed to have an independent doctor on the sideline who is supposed to evaluate players who, potentially, have concussion issues. I don’t recall a point during the game where McCarthy went into the medical tent or anything like that, but I’m surprised that the independent doctor didn’t catch anything during the game and that McCarthy’s symptoms were delayed until afterwards.
Of course, this will give the tin foil hat crowd the opportunity to let us know that O’Connell is now “soft benching” McCarthy again after his performance on Sunday, where the offense once again struggled to move the football. This is insane, of course, but if you’ve spent any time on social media, you’re aware that’s what’s going to happen.
In the event that McCarthy can’t go on Sunday against Seattle, the quarterback duties will fall to undrafted rookie Max Brosmer, who is the current backup on the depth chart. He would be backed up by journeyman John Wolford, who the Vikings signed to the practice squad a couple of weeks ago.
Once again, the Minnesota Vikings have declared that quarterback J.J. McCarthy is in the league’s concussion protocol after presenting symptoms on the team’s trip home from Green Bay yesterday. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
