Former Lions special teams captain and Pro Bowler Jalen Reeves-Maybin has found a new home in the NFC North.
The 30-year-old veteran linebacker and special teamer was signed to the Chicago Bears practice squad, the team announced Tuesday.
First drafted in 2017 by the Lions in the fourth round, Reeves-Maybin played in Detroit for seven of the eight past seasons with a stint in Houston in 2022. He returned to the Lions afterwards and served an important role in the team’s success the past few years—named special teams captain in 2023 and 2024. He’s made a Pro Bowl and been named second-team All-Pro, and also serves as the president of the NFL Players Association.
Much to the dismay of may Detroit fans who loved him, the Lions parted ways with Reeves-Maybin last February to save $2 million in cap space.
Back in 2023, head coach Dan Campbell notably gave props in a locker room speech after a nail-biting win to Reeves-Maybin among other veterans, whom he called “the old guard.” Jeremy put it perfectly in his article from when it happened: “These players, much like us as fans, have been with this organization for years and have had to endure some of the lowest, most frustrating points in this franchise’s history. Yet, throughout it all, every single one of these players gave it their all, remained loyal to the team, and are now part of the most special season in at least three decades of this franchise.”
