Giants news, 11/20: Jaxson Dart closes in on return from concussion

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

How Jaxson Dart’s emergence opens up NFL draft options for the Giants | New York Post

There is no real need to get so far ahead of ourselves. After all, it is not yet Thanksgiving. The leaves are still clinging to their branches and the winter cold is merely hinting at its arrival.

The Giants still have six games remaining. Heck, they have not even reached their bye week yet — that comes incredibly late, in Week 14.

Jameis Winston sound from last week

On the latest episode of “No Free Lunch,” the 31-year-old sat down with Ndamukong Suh to share the steep learning curve for life in the NFL, specifically the hard lessons he learned about the money that follows success.

In the wide-ranging conversation, Winston shared his struggles to balance generosity and discipline, the cost of learning the difference between obligation and enablement, and what he believes are the most important lessons for young athletes in today’s NIL-fueled sports world. The discussion also highlighted what those close to Winston know well: His unbridled, often goofy personality isn’t because he’s naive; it’s because he chooses to be joyful.

Need something fresh: 4. New York Giants. Jaxson Dart and Jayden Daniels have both flashed some high-end ability, with Daniels reaching the higher heights as a rookie. New York has more to build around elsewhere on the roster (Dexter Lawrence, Andrew Thomas, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo, Brian Burns, Abdul Carter). However, we will still lean toward the more talented quarterback, who produced at an even higher level, when it comes to adjudicating which team has a brighter future — especially when both appear to be equally significant potential injury risks. Plus, the Giants still need to bring in a new coaching staff and we don’t know how that will go.

Giants interim HC Mike Kafka, 38: A former NFL quarterback who was drafted by Andy Reid’s Eagles in 2010, Kafka earned a strong reputation as a QB tutor after reuniting with Reid in Kansas City as a quality control coach in 2017. The Giants’ surprise success in 2022, his first year as offensive coordinator in New York, helped propel Kafka’s head-coaching candidacy; earlier this month, the firing of Brian Daboll thrust Kafka into a more extended audition as the interim head coach on a Giants team depleted by injuries. At minimum, it’s another opportunity for Kafka to demonstrate he can handle running the show. Other on the Giants staff mentioned include: OC Tim Kelly, offensive passing game coordinator/QB coach Shea Tierney, assistant QB coach Chad Hall, OLB coach Charlie Bullen, and DC Shane Bowen.

Two other names of name were former Giants quarterbacks Colts passing game coordinator Alex Tanney and Broncos offensive pass game coordinator/QB coach Davis Webb, a third-round pick by the Giants in the 2017 NFL Draft who has been on the fast track since Sean Payton hired him as quarterbacks coach in 2023 and was promoted this year.

New York Giants face franchise’s earliest playoff elimination since 1976 | USAToday.com

Playoff scenario expert Joe Ferriera shared that the Giants can be eliminated from postseason contention as early as this weekend with a loss to the Detroit Lions and a Dallas, Minnesota or Seattle win — the earliest exit for the Giants since the first year they called the Meadowlands Sports Complex their home.

This week’s opponent

St. Brown’s stat line of just two catches on 12 targets was ugly, but Lions quarterback Jared Goff said that St. Brown didn’t have an off night. Goff says he’s the one who was off.

“I don’t think anything feels off, except for this past week I was off trying to get him the ball,” Goff said. “He’s playing well. I’ve got to find ways to get it to him in space and be more accurate in those instances. I have been in my career so it’s not something I’m worried about.”

Lions ‘hopeful’ CB D.J. Reed returns from IR vs. Giants | Pride of Detroit

Detroit’s defense is starting to get healthier and could get a big piece in their secondary back from injury as head coach Dan Campbell is hopeful veteran cornerback D.J. Reed can return to the lineup Sunday vs. the New York Giants after sitting out Detroit’s last five games with a hamstring injury suffered Week 4 vs. Cleveland.

“I’m hopeful,” Campbell said Wednesday. “I think a lot of it will be determined tomorrow in these full speed practices, tomorrow and Friday. He looked pretty good last week and so we’ll see.”

Campbell says he sees a lot of that interim-coach energy when watching tape of the Giants’ game against the Packers on Sunday.

“I think there was some fresh energy last week when you watched them against Green Bay. Sometimes it’s just that newness,” Campbell said. “Just the change itself, something a little different or a little new can spark you. There was a little bit of that. They’ve always played hard, watch the tape, these guys played hard in September, October, early November. But there’s probably a little bit of that, and they had a chance to beat Green Bay.”
