NY Giants news, 11/19: Jaxson Dart’s running, Cam Skattebo’s WWE cameo

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Jaxson Dart’s concussion absence needs to be a lesson for QB — and the Giants | New York Post

Seeing Jaxson Dart on the sideline was a jarring reminder of how fragile this can all be. When he returns – the expectation is this week – everyone involved, including Dart himself, has to do everything possible to keep him healthy and on the field.

The Giants’ offensive line finally isn’t a weakness. Now NY must build unit into a strength | The Athletic

A variety of factors have contributed to the improved play. Having left tackle Andrew Thomas healthy and playing at an All-Pro level provides an immeasurable boost to the offense. The other key from a personnel standpoint is that there are no glaring weaknesses. The offensive line is a weak-link unit, where one vulnerable spot can drag down the entire group. That has been the case for the Giants in recent seasons, and sometimes at more than one spot. But even though Thomas is the only star on the line, the rest of the group is at least competent.

The final ingredient is coaching. Even if the talent isn’t overwhelming, offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo has the experienced group working well together. The jailbreak free rushes that were common in past years have been virtually non-existent this season.

Giants running back Cam Skattebo fired back at critics who didn’t like his cameo on WWE on Monday. In a social media post, after his role in a viral ringside scuffle at a WWE event, he said he’s simply trying to enjoy himself while recovering from a season-ending ankle injury.

“Aye, honestly, if you don’t like that I’m having a good time while dealing with a tough time, then just go ahead and unfollow and casually move on,” Skattebo wrote on a post on X/Twitter. “I’m not able to play football and have the fun I’ve been having my whole life, so I am doing things outside the box, trying to find stuff to keep me happy. Enjoy the rest of y’all’s week and just don’t talk about me if you ain’t got nothing nice to say.”

NY Giants’ best lesson in coaching search will be standing on other sideline in Detroit | The Record

There are lessons to be learned in every NFL coaching search, and at this point, the New York Giants have plenty to share internally since Tom Coughlin’s exit at the end of the 2015 season.

Four head coaches have come and gone in the decade that followed: Ben McAdoo, Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge and now Brian Daboll, fired last week after three years and 10 games.

“Tim McDonnell is involved in the process as well,” said ESPN’s Jordan Raanan during a recent episode of Breaking Big Blue. “Think back to the text messages between Brian (Daboll) and Brian (Flores). Look at who was the guy who was talking to Brian Flores during that. Guess who it was? It was Tim McDonnell. So, he’s also involved in it. I think Chris Mara is somebody who is going to play a bigger role this time around, too.”

Detroit Lions activate LB Malcolm Rodriguez from PUP | Pride of Detroit

The Detroit Lions announced on Tuesday that they have activated linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez from the physically unable to perform list to the team’s active 53-man roster. No corresponding move was necessary, as the Lions had an open spot on their roster after placing tight end Sam LaPorta on injured reserve Saturday.

Rodriguez returns after suffering a torn ACL in Detroit’s Thanksgiving game against the Buffalo Bills last year. He was due to return earlier, but had a setback in recovery that reportedly required an additional procedure. Rodriguez returned to practice three weeks ago, and Tuesday marked the end of his 21-day evaluation period, meaning Detroit either had to put him on the 53-man roster or revert him to season-ending reserve/PUP. Now that he’s activated, he is eligible to play in this Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

Campbell said their difficulties on offense Sunday started with the ineffectiveness of the run game and their 3.5-yard average per rush. He said that was all inclusive across the offensive unit. Detroit was just 3-for-13 on third down and 0-for-5 on fourth down and that wasn’t good enough. It was a combination of missed throws, pressures, tipped balls at the line of scrimmage, drops and a couple bad calls on his part.

“There are some calls I want back, bad,” Campbell said. “So, I had a hand in that.”

Who’s under the most pressure: Offensive coordinator John Morton. Morton was stripped of his playcalling duties after a Week 9 loss to the Vikings, and he might have to fight to secure a long-term role with the Lions. In 2024, Detroit led the NFL with 33.2 points per game under former OC Ben Johnson, and Morton was given the tall order of following the current Bears coach. Morton has said he’s “fully supportive” of the Campbell’s decision and would be ready if he’s needed to call plays again. But things not initially working in that area could be costly for his future.
