For intense X’s and O’s analysis, I’m probably not the first Eagles fan you’re going to jump to for a question. When it comes to something utterly esoteric and borderline irrelevant, however, I am the person for the job. A random play against the Giants in 2002? I can see it like it was yesterday. What color uniforms the Eagles wore on a given fall Sunday in 2013? It’s likely imprinted in my brain.
Scrolling Twitter on Thursday morning, I saw a post about how the Eagles should bring back their all-Midnight Green look for this weekend’s huge Sunday Night Football matchup with the Lions:
You know what? I agree. Let’s do it.
This might be a spot where the Eagles would wear their all-black uniforms, but I would bet good money they save the “Black Out Game” for the Black Friday home matchup with the Bears in a couple of weeks. Hey, it fits the name for a nationally televised game!
This primetime game this Sunday against Detroit has a ton of juice though. It could decide the No. 1 seed in the conference and could even be a potential playoff preview. The Birds really haven’t faced this iteration of the Lions at their best on top of it all. It’s long overdue. Maybe we add fuel to the fire while bringing back a look that has otherwise been lost to time?
I am more than happy to be corrected if wrong, but, from what I can tell, it appears that the first time the Eagles wore this combination was on Monday Night Football against San Francisco in 1997 and the most recent occurrence was in 2002 against Washington. If the Sixers are going to bring back some nostalgia for the turn of the century with the return of their Allen Iverson-era black uniforms, how about the Eagles do the same across the Sports Complex?
The Eagles have mixed things up uniform wise in the Nick Sirianni era. They debuted the white jerseys-black pants combination for the first time ever in 2021. Of course, they brought back their phenomenal Kelly Green throwback jerseys in 2023, too. I understand that purists may not way to continue deviating from traditional uniforms, but, between the “Rivalries” uniforms springing up this year across the leagues and the fact that Eagles already have four different jersey colors they can sport, we have likely crossed the Rubicon on that front.
There are an infinite amount of more pressing matters in the world, but as I sit here typing this, I can think of nothing else that would make me feel better than to see the Eagles go Midnight Green-on-Midnight Green this weekend.
