The Rams signed tight end Nick Muse to the practice squad on Tuesday, giving Sean McVay yet another option at the position moving forward. Muse may only be on the practice squad right now but his addition to the roster in any capacity is interesting given that L.A. already has four notable tight ends on the 53-man roster and rookie Mark Redman on the practice squad.
The 27-year-old Muse has some experience with a McVay offense as he has spent his entire career with the Minnesota Vikings and Kevin O’Connell.
The Vikings drafted Muse out of South Carolina in the 7th round of the 2022 draft. Muse had 805 yards in three seasons at South Carolina after transferring from William & Mary. At his pro day, Muse measured just under 6’5, 259 lbs, and ran a 4.71 40-yard dash with an impressive 27 reps on the bench. Muse split time between the practice squad and active roster for three seasons in Minnesota and even “won” a Super Bowl with the Eagles after signing to the Philadelphia practice squad literally weeks before the championship.
But Muse was cut by the Eagles in training camp and has briefly spent time on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. He may not be long for the Rams (not to be confused with Hunter Long) but you never really know.
The Rams could have filled any positional need with the open spot on their practice squad and they chose as tight end. Is that just because they’re fans of Muse specifically or does McVay want assurance that if one of his four options goes down that he will still have four options moving forward? After all, the Rams used 13 personnel at an absurdly high rate in Week 10, so this news may not be the last time we hear about Muse.
