That was another disappointing game for the Bengals, but hey, the first 10 seconds were pretty cool.
Charlie Jones, took the opening kickoff 99 yards to the house, starting the Bengals out with a 7-0 lead.
Let’s take a look…
This was a great play by the dynamic Jones, but he didn’t do it alone. Let’s see how the blocks set up Jones for the score.
From left to right in this picture, the Bengals have Oren Burks, Drew Sample. Joe Gile-Harris, Cedric Johnson, and Tanner Hudson on the front line.
Burks blocks the man just inside of him. This proves difficult as the coverage man comes across his face, but Burks sticks with him and is able to get his body in position between Jones and the would-be tackler.
Next is Drew Sample who easily takes care of the man to his inside.
Let’s skip the next two for now, and move on to Hudson, who blocks out on the man to his outside.
This leaves the force player on the outside unblocked, but Samaje Perine, who is back with Jones initially, comes up and blocks him out.
Of course, we skipped the inner most player in this picture. Let’s take a look at another picture to discuss this double team block.
Giles-Harris and Johnson come together for the double-team block.
When they engage on the block, the coverage man is just inside the numbers, which is the lane that he is responsible for.
By the time Jones gets there, the blockers have pushed the coverage man outside of the numbers, creating a huge running lane.
At that point, all Jones had to do was make the kicker miss.
This was a huge play which was well executed by a collection of most reserve players.
