With the 2-5 Las Vegas Raiders on a bye last week and the NFL’s trade deadline approaching on Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m. PST, some expected to hear news about wide receiver Jakobi Meyers getting dealt out of Las Vegas. However, Meyers remains on the team, and it may have to do with the price tag the Raiders have on him.
“Sources: Multiple teams have shown interest in trading for Raiders WR Jakobi Meyers, who’s in the final year of his contract and has publicly said he still wants to be traded,” NFL Insider Jordan Schultz reported via a post on X/Twitter. “However, teams have had a hard time getting a clear read on whether Las Vegas is truly willing to move him. The belief is it would take at least a Day 2 pick for the Raiders to even consider it.”
This is in line with what ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported on Sunday.
“Even though Jakobi Meyers has requested a trade, the Las Vegas Raiders would deal the veteran wide receiver only if they felt they were getting strong value in return, sources told ESPN,” Schefter wrote. “…The Raiders aren’t exactly looking to automatically trade Meyers, according to sources, and are willing to carry him on their roster until his contract expires after this season.”
For comparison, Las Vegas received a conditional third-round pick from the New York Jets for wideout Davante Adams last year. So, the organization is looking for the same compensation for Meyers that it obtained for the six-time Pro Bowler. That seems pretty steep for a guy who has just one 1,000-yard season on his resume, as a fourth- or a fifth-round pick (early Day 3) seems more likely.
Granted, this could be a negotiation tactic by the Raiders to help drive the price tag up on Meyers. They still have a week from Tuesday to come to terms with a trade partner and aren’t in any rush to strike a deal. With the clock ticking, “multiple” teams showing interest in the receiver and a public price tag, it seems like John Spytek is looking to squeeze as much value as he can out of a potential deal.
We’ll know by next week if Spytek’s efforts were futile or effective.
