As they prepare for their Week 9 meeting on Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Vikings and the Detroit Lions are heading in opposite directions, and that is reflected in the early betting odds for this one.
The Vikings are an 8.5-point underdog heading into this weekend’s matchup at Ford Field, with the over/under currently sitting at 48.5 points, according to the FanDuel Sportsbook.
As we know, the Vikings have dropped their last two games, including a 37-10 throttling on Thursday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers. In that one, the Vikings had no answers for anything the Chargers did offensively, and ran Carson Wentz out there at quarterback until his body, literally, gave out on him. It appears that the Vikings are finally ready to turn back to J.J. McCarthy, who hasn’t played since Week 2 after suffering a high ankle sprain.
The Lions, on the other hand, come into this one with a record of 5-2, and are averaging more than 30 points a game on the season. Since losing to Green Bay in their season opener, the Lions have won five of their last six, including a 24-9 victory over Tampa Bay two weeks ago. They are coming off of their bye week heading into this one.
This is one of the bigger point spreads we’ve seen the Vikings on the wrong end of in quite a while, but it’s really hard to make an argument that it should be any closer than it currently is. The Lions are on a roll and coming off of their bye week on their home field, while the Vikings are. . .well, I think “adrift” would be a good way to describe it. They need to turn things around in a hurry, and this is a really difficult place to try to do that.
