Giants news, 10/29: Kayvon Thibodeaux trade rumors, Dexter Lawrence, Jaxson Dart, more headlines

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

From Big Blue View

Other Giant observations

Should 2-6 Giants be buyers at NFL trade deadline to help Jaxson Dart develop? | The Athletic

On the surface, it’s absurd for a team in the Giants’ position to consider giving up draft assets to improve the current roster. But digging deeper, the development of Jaxson Dart could justify a move that will upgrade the rookie quarterback’s weapons for the second half of the season.

The challenge for Schoen is threading the needle of upgrading Dart’s supporting cast while preserving draft capital for a roster that still has glaring deficiencies. Schoen’s passivity thus far has been perplexing, as the Giants didn’t make any receiver additions in the three weeks following Nabers’ injury until signing Ray-Ray McCloud to the practice squad Thursday.

Giants must be smart with Jaxson Dart, not expect him to save them | New York Daily News

Keeping Dart on the field, healthy enough to run the offense, has to be the Giants’ priority. The NFL trade deadline could become a part of the story of how the Giants support Dart best, too.

Dealing premium assets for a receiver at this juncture would seem wasteful for the organization’s future, since that would not turn this into a playoff team or anything close…However they do it, the Giants need a cohesive plan. And that plan needs to be centered around getting the most out of this season for Dart while not putting him at unnecessary risk and dragging his psyche and future down with this 2025 season and this regime.

2. Brian Daboll (New York Giants). Can Jaxson Dart even save Daboll’s job at this rate? The Giants have struggled since their shocking win over the Eagles in Week 6, blowing an 18-point lead at the Broncos with six minutes left — then getting blown out by the Eagles just 17 days after they defeated Philadelphia.

Season-ending injuries to Malik Nabers and Cam Skattebo have demoralized the Giants’ offense, even with Dart playing well. Daboll would be safe, but it’s inexcusable to a have a fourth-quarter collapse like the one that the Giants had in Denver followed by the way that Daboll acted with his team getting jobbed by the “tush push” fumble and offensive pass interference call that wasn’t. Both actions clearly affected the Giants in the blowout loss, and they showed that Daboll is fighting for his job every week. Daboll won’t be gone until after the season, but the Giants need a culture change. Time to move on.

Trade Packages, Landing Spots for Raiders’ Jakobi Meyers Amid Deadline Rumors | Bleacher Report

New York Giants receive: WR Jakobi Meyers

Las Vegas Raiders Receive: 2026 4th-Round Pick, OL Evan Neal

While Meyers isn’t going to single-handedly salvage Big Blue’s year, he represents a massive upgrade over the current crop of receivers Dart has been working with following Malik Nabers’ season-ending knee injury.

Getting an opportunity to build rapport with Meyers, who has potential to become a priority free-agent target for New York in a few months, while staying somewhat competitive is worth the cost of admission.

Dl Dexter Lawrence to the Baltimore Ravens As part of one of the league’s most disruptive defensive lines, Lawrence has remained a stellar interior game-wrecker. His 83.1 PFF pass-rushing grade is third among qualified interior defenders. Part of the Ravens’ poor defensive start stems from significant injuries along their defensive interior, including to Nnamdi Madubuike and Broderick Washington. In their stead, Baltimore ranks 22nd in overall PFF grade and 25th in PFF run-defense grade at the position.

Now 2-6, the Giants’ flame of youthful energy has quickly extinguished, especially after an unfortunate ankle injury to Cam Skattebo. The team figures to be a seller at the deadline, but Lawrence feels too valuable to ship away. Yet if there were any ideal suitor, the Ravens — now the favorite to win the AFC North — would be near the top of the list.

The Giants defense gives up backbreaking plays at a high rate

Tuesday marked one month since Nabers tore his ACL and the stud receiver still has not undergone reconstructive surgery, though it is supposed to happen soon. Why the delay?

“Some players will have a very significant amount of swelling after this injury and operating on them right away can actually lead to significant stiffness down the line because it’s an additional trauma to the knee – even though it’s being done for good,” Dr. Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas, an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. “It actually ends up speeding up recovery to wait until the knee is very quiet – not a lot of swelling and range of motion is essentially full, when the knee feels almost normal other than the instability through the ACL. It sounds counterintuitive, but in the long run it limits the risk for complications related to the surgery.”

Top 15 NFL rookies through Week 8 | PFF

5. RB Cam Skattebo, New York Giants (80.5). Skattebo finishes his season tied as PFF’s third-highest-graded running back (80.5). He carried the ball 101 times for 410 yards, 27 first downs and five touchdowns, and he also produced 22 missed tackles and 10 explosive gains — all top-three marks among rookies. He also continues to lead the position in PFF run-blocking grade (83.1).

“We have two really good guys to step up and replicate what Skatt brought to our offense in tandem,” right guard Greg Van Roten said. “We’re just excited for [Tracy] to get back to form and build on what he did last year. I think he is a better player this year than he was last year – he’s seen a lot of stuff, more comfortable in his role. I think he’s anxious to show that he’s still a good running back.”

Jaxson Dart nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Week | Giants.com

For the seventh consecutive week, a Giants rookie is being recognized. Quarterback Jaxson Dart has once again been nominated for Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week. The 22-year-old completed 14 of 24 passes for 193 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions for a 98.1 passer rating against the Eagles. Dart has been nominated for the weekly award after each of his first five career starts.

This week’s field design for Giants legacy game

Best offseason addition: QB Jaxson Dart The rookie quarterback has impressed despite being 2-3 as a starter. He has injected life into a listless Giants offense that had trouble scoring the previous two-plus seasons. It’s more than just Dart’s arm. Perhaps most impressive has been his ability to avoid sacks and use his legs. Dart joined Cam Newton this week as the only quarterbacks since 1950 to have a passing and rushing touchdown in four of their first five career starts, per ESPN Research.

The Ringer’s 2025 NFL Midseason All-Rookie Team | The Ringer

Quarterback: Jaxson Dart, New York Giants. So far, Dart’s rookie year has reminded me of Carson Wentz’s with the Eagles in 2016. While Dart doesn’t have the same raw arm talent that Wentz did back then, he’s got similar self-belief, bordering on arrogance. Dart has a tendency to hold on to the ball, looking for a way to escape or make the play, and as a result, he has taken a beating in the pocket. He’s being blitzed at the sixth-highest rate in the league, and he’s being either hit or sacked on 17 percent of his dropbacks, which ranks 26th. He’s also turnover prone when under pressure, with three interceptions and a lost fumble in his five starts.

As the season goes on, we’ll see whether he’s able to adapt his style of play into something a bit more stable, because what he’s doing so far can’t be sustained over the long term. By tamping down on the silly mistakes, Dart could be a serviceable quarterback for New York for the next few seasons.

This week’s opponent

Purdy has been sidelined by a toe injury, but took part in practice on a limited basis every day last week before being ruled out. Shanahan said he’ll have a better idea about the quarterback’s outlook when the team is back at work in a couple of days. Mac Jones has been starting in Purdy’s place and Shanahan called him day-to-day with a bruised knee. He was 19-of-32 for 193 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Sunday’s loss to the Texans.

“I think it’s too early to say,” Shanahan said. “I don’t think it’s a long shot, but I know he is doing better and we’ll see how he’s doing Wednesday. Hopefully if he’s doing good, he’ll get in some reps.”

The Carolina Panthers signed Trevis Gipson off the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. Gipson, who was out of elevations, would have needed to be promoted full-time to the 49ers’ active roster if he were to play again. Despite releasing Gipson, your elevations do not reset when you re-sign.

So, the player who just played 39 snaps in Week 7 won’t have the chance to make the 49ers roster because he’s no longer on the team. It’s not a big blow from a talent standpoint, but it absolutely is from a personnel perspective. Bryce Huff will miss another week. Sam Okuayinonu went down with an injury in the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans. His current status is day-to-day with an ankle injury. Yetur Gross-Matos is also out. That leaves Mykel Williams and Robert Beal as the lone healthy edge rushers for the Niners.

Best offseason addition: DC Robert Saleh. Take it from San Francisco tight end George Kittle, who has said all year that Saleh has been the Niners’ biggest addition. Through eight games, Saleh has had to earn every penny with a revamped defense that has lost star linebacker Fred Warner (ankle) and end Nick Bosa (ACL) to season-ending injuries. It hasn’t been perfect, as there is still a lack of pass rush and interceptions, but Saleh’s defense is eighth best in points allowed (20.5). It would be no surprise if Saleh is again a strong candidate in the next head coaching cycle.
