The injury to New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo was gruesome and demoralizing, but the infectious rookie should be ready for training camp. according a NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
Rapoport reports that Skattebo suffered a fractured fibula as well as a ruptured deltoid ligament in addition to the dislocation. Despite the severity of the wound, Skattebo reportedly faces a relatively simple recovery process now that it’s been surgically repaired.
The deltoid ligament is part of the ankle joint, helping to connect the foot to the leg, as well as support and stabilize the joint.

Dr. Kyle Flik, an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who has served as team doctor for several Albany, N.Y-area minor league teams, believes Skattebo should recover well.
“I would bet he recovers well and is back in good shape next season,” Flik told Big Blue View. “In general, it [an open fracture] is just a bit of a higher-risk injury than a typical ankle fracture.
“But, I’m sure he’s in good hands!”
With an open fracture, there a “5-10 percent chance for infection,” Flik said. That, of course, is an evnetuality that would lead to a poorer outcome.
Flik said that Skattebo might suffer “some limited range of motion/stiffnesss.”
“With a great outcome he may not, but there potential for future arthritis,” Flik said.
Skattebo “should be ready for summer,” Flik said.
A six-month recovery window would put Skattebo’s return some time in April or possibly early May. Barring setbacks, he could be ready for OTAs and should be ready for mandatory minicamp in June.
The Giants will have to make due without Skattebo for the next nine games, but should have him back next season.
