The bye week is the perfect week to both reflect and look toward the future. So on this week’s PODcast, we did just that.
To kick off the show, we examined the good and the bad from the Detroit Lions’ first seven games of the season, and we did so by handing out some superlative awards. We recognize team accomplishments, individual performances, and which units are playing the best/worst. Here are just some of the “awards,” we hand out in our first segment:
- Most impressive Lions win so far
- Most surprising aspect of the team
- Biggest concern moving forward
- Offensive/Defensive MVP
- Breakout player of the season
- Biggest disappointment so far
Then, we move to the future and talk about the 10 games remaining. The NFC playoff picture is starting to clear up, particularly when looking at Week 8 results. The following NFC contenders all lost in convincing fashion: Vikings, Bears, Falcons, Panthers, 49ers, Cowboys, and Commanders. Given those are the teams currently ranked seven through 13 in the conference, does that mean there’s no real concern for the Lions falling out of a playoff spot?
As for the six other teams (including the Lions) currently holding a playoff spot, we try to answer the following questions:
- Which team is the biggest threat?
- Which team is the toughest matchup for Detroit?
- Who doesn’t worry you at all?
- Are the Lions more likely to be a Wild Card or division winner?
Beyond that, we also look to the Lions’ roster to identify which players are the biggest keys for the Lions to continue their success into January (and beyond). Most importantly, we identify what needs to happen down the stretch for the Lions to finally make and win a Super Bowl.
