It’s been a pretty darn good Sunday for the Detroit Lions. Not only are the players resting up and healing from their injuries prior to their Week 9 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings. But as they watched the action from home, they saw some NFC contenders fall to their opponents—creating some room for the Lions in the playoff race. Among the favorable outcomes include:
- Ravens defeating Bears
- Broncos defeating Cowboys
- Dolphins defeating Falcons
- Texans defeating 49ers
Combine that with the Vikings’ loss on Thursday night, and the Lions are officially winning their bye week.
But they haven’t won it yet.
That’s because Sunday night is the most important game of the week for the Lions. The division-leading Green Bay Packers are inaction against the Pittsburgh Steelers. At 4-1-1, the Packers actually entered the week as the No. 1 seed in the entire conference, and they’ll hold that spot if they beat the Steelers. However, if they lose and drop to 4-2-1, they’ll drop all the way to the NFC’s seven seed. Meanwhile, the Lions would jump from their current fifth seed up to the third seed. Most importantly, they’d hold the top spot in the division, with a half-game lead over Green Bay.
This is what I choose to focus on, rather than a night that will surround Aaron Rodgers and his first game against the Packers in his entire NFL career.
