“All went well” with Cam Skattebo’s surgery on Sunday night to repair the running back’s dislocated right ankle, according to New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll.
The rookie running back was injured on Sunday during the Giants’ 38-20 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and had surgery to repair the damage at a Philadelphia-area hospital.
“I’m not going to get into the particulars, but all went well,” Daboll said. “He’s recovering, and obviously he’ll be missed, but on the road to recovery.”
Daboll said Skattebo texted him post-surgery at 4:08 a.m.
“That’s Skatt,” Daboll said. “He’s just got an infectious personality.”
The Giants have running backs Tyrone Tracy and Devin Singletary on the roster. Daboll did not indicate whether the team would bring Dante Miller off the practice squad or look to add a veteran running back to fill Skattebo’s roster spot.
“We’ve got a week here to decide what we want to do,” he said.
Concussion protocol fine
Daboll refused to comment on the fine received for violating the league’s concussion protocol Week 6 when he entered the medical tent during while quarterback Jaxson Dart was being evaluated.
“I’ve had conversations with the league, and that’s the way they’ll stay,” Daboll said. “I don’t have any comment on that.”
The Giants were fined $200,000, Daboll $100,000 and Skattebo, who also entered the tent, $15,000.
Trade deadline
The Giants have now lost Skattebo and wide receiver Malik Nabers, their leading rusher and leading receiver, for the season.
Do the Giants need to make a move before the Nov. 4 NFL trade deadline to add a playmaker on offense?
“I leave that to [GM] Joe [Schoen] relative to looking at the league,” Daboll said. “If he has any discussions that he wants to have, he always brings them up. We have open dialogue. But my focus is the guys that we have on our football team right now and trying to improve them the best way that we can.”
Woeful run defense
After giving up 276 yards rushing on 33 carries on Sunday, 8.4 yards per attempt, the Giants are last in the NFL in rushing defense. For the season, they are giving up 5.7 yards per rushing attempt
“We need to do a better job on our run defense, no question about it,” Daboll said.
“There’s times where they have good calls and they have numbers. There’s times where they do a good job of blocking and we got to do a better job of shedding. And there’s times where we miss tackles. That’s usually three of the main things in run defense. So, give them [the Eagles] credit. They had some good plays against some of the defenses that we had, whether we blitzed away from it, whatever it may be. We missed some tackles, and they took advantage of it.”
