Falcons QB Kirk Cousins “highly likely” to start Sunday vs. Miami Dolphins

Last week, Tua Tagovailoa and Dillion Gabriel made history by becoming the first pair of left-handed starting quarterbacks to square off since 2006. Many thought we’d get another matchup between southpaws this week, but according to a prominent NFL insider, Miami may be facing off against a proven veteran instead.

According to ESPN’s Senior NFL Insider, Adam Schefter, it is “highly likely” that Kirk Cousins will be the starting quarterback — not Michael Penix Jr. — for the Atlanta Falcons when they face off against Anthony Weaver’s struggling defense Sunday afternoon.

Cousins, 37, has not started a game for Atlanta this year, but did appear late in a week 3 blowout loss to the Carolina Panthers earlier this season, completing 5 of 7 passes for 29 yards.

In 2024, after signing a massive four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons in the offseason, Cousins started 14 games for Atlanta, finishing with a 7-7 record. That season, he completed 66.9% percent of his passes for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and a career-high 16 interceptions.

Throughout Cousins’ 14-year career, the veteran gunslinger holds a 2-1 overall record vs. the Dolphins, starting games for the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Commanders.

As for Miami, it’s hard to predict whether or not this is a good thing. After all, the Falcons will still have the best running back in football in Bijan Robinson, and star wide receiver Drake London is going to be a handful for the Dolphins’ secondary. They also have playmakers like KhaDarel Hodge, Darnell Money, and, who can forget, tight Kyle Pitts, a fan favorite of this fanbase pre-draft.

Can the Dolphins get their second win of the season, or will it be Kirk Cousins who gets the last laugh?

The Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons are scheduled to kick off at 1 PM ET tomorrow, live from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

What are your thoughts on the change at quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons? Do you think this improves the Dolphins’ odds of winning? Let us know in the comments section below!
