It looks like the Minnesota Vikings will soon be getting some help in the backfield. How soon? We don’t know yet, but it could be as early as this Thursday when they face the Los Angeles Chargers.
The team has announced that they have opened the practice window for running back Aaron Jones, and he could be added to the active roster in time for Thursday’s game. He was listed as being “limited” in Tuesday’s walkthrough practice.
Jones hasn’t been on the field since Week 2, when he suffered a hamstring injury in the Vikings’ loss to the Atlanta Falcons. In his absence, the Vikings have leaned heavily on Jordan Mason, and Mason has looked pretty solid as the lead back. Zavier Scott has also seen some action as Mason’s primary backup in Jones’ absence.
Now that the Vikings have opened up Jones’ practice window, they have 21 days to officially add him to the 53-man roster. Should they not do so for whatever reason, Jones would go back on injured reserve and his season would be over. However, it would be pretty surprising for the Vikings to clear the road for him to come back and then not bring him back, barring some sort of setback in practice.
We’ll know on Wednesday when the final injury reports come out whether or not Jones will be back against Los Angeles or if his return will be held back until Week 9 at the earliest. Whenever it is, it will be nice to see him back again to form a tandem with Mason in the Vikings’ backfield.
