New York Giants edge defender Brian Burns said his emotional outburst leaving the field after Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos wasn’t meant as criticism of his defensive coordinator. It came from disbelief that the pass, a 29-yarder from Denver quarterback Bo Nix to wide receiver Marvin Mims, actually got completed.
“That call was perfect for that situation because there was 30 seconds left, no timeouts. Catch, tackle, game over,” Burns said. “The ball wasn’t even aiming for Mims. It was for Courtland [Sutton]. He missed the throw and it just fell in his lap.
“It was just unlucky.”
The play helped set up the game-winning field goal for Denver in the Giants’ 33-32 loss on sunday.
Burns said his reaction was “disbelief.”
“We called a call specifically to take away that play,” Burns said. “Nix wasn’t even trying to throw it to Mims and it just so happened to be completed. It’s kind of like a disbelief. There’s no way we dropped eight and still couldn’t stop that ball from being completed.”
Burns understands that Bowen is being heavily criticized, and that the post-game video did not help. He is backing the embattled defensive coordinator, though.
“Everybody is entitled to their own opinion,” Burns said. “However you view it, whatever your perspective is, I respect your perspective, you can have that, but we are bought in.”
Burns said it is a “tough situation” for Bowen.
“It is what it is. At the end of the day, we got something that we got to have our attention on, and that’s the Eagles,” Burns said. “So hopefully Shane ain’t too caught up in all that stuff that people are saying.I’m not trying to look at it. I’m trying to look at Saquon and Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown.”
